Test Feb 5, 2010

This thread seems to have disappeared.

This is just a test to see if it comes back up on the forum page or if it's lost forever...

Privacy adieu Feb 5, 2010

Even Facebook seems to offer more privacy than this feature. Where is the opt-out function? Is this feature intended to stifle discussion or promote it?
At first glance this is a rather disappointing addition.

P.S. If you want feedback, put this back on the front page where it belongs. If not, create a no-reply sticky and file it under "Translation News".

Again, what is going on?

Is it by any chance related to the fact that I have disabled the Web analytics in my profile?
http://www.proz.com/?sp=settings_analytics

If this is related, could someone from staff explain how I can contribute to Poll discussions if I am not using any of these social networking sites?

The new system is awful, unprofessional, producing spam and distorting Feb 8, 2010

All pictures are heavily distorted. Please pay a $1,000 compensation to all those whose faces have been disfigured.

You cannot edit your own comments etc.

In brief, the new system is good for idle bla-bla-bla performed by apes and monkeys from dating sites.

I don't care about Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo etc. etc., as I am not paid by them.

Also, my posts at Proz are of no interest for Facebook etc., and vice versa.

In addition, in no case do I want more spam messages at Facebook etc. etc. from Proz, as well.

I'm afraid, you have mistaken the address (I mean the site). Proz is a professional web site, not a social bla-bla-bla network. Keep ot free from inevitable stupidity of those "social" networks.

Put the "old" system back ASAP. What wrong was in it?

I think the new one has been just a bad joke. Or an unsuccessful attempt to earn a bit more money. However, if so, you guys are already paid by members, therefore don't play around too much. Don't become so primitive.

Hello Alexander,

Please note that there is no revenue involved for ProZ.com in the commenting system.

Can you tell me how this has produced spam for you? You should not be receiving any unsolicited email as a result of using the comment feature for quick polls. Thanks.

Please try again Feb 8, 2010

Hello Melanie and Katalin,

The "Discuss" feature has been adjusted. Could you please try again and let me know if it works for you now?

As for threads in the "Poll discussion" forum, you see a thread from January 28 as the last one since the "Discuss" feature for polls was implemented right after that.

Hope this explains.

Regards,

Lucia

"Fixed", but I am not happy at all - please bring back the old system Feb 8, 2010

Lucia,
I can see the link for the discussion now, but when I clicked on it I realized what everybody has been complaining about in this thread.
As it is now, there is no way to contribute to the discussions without having my information (public name, profile number and picture) sent to this third party (Echo).
This is ridiculous!!!
What was wrong with the old system?
Why did you do this?
Nobody complained about the Poll Discussion forums, did they?

Nobody complained about the Poll Discussion forums, did they?

I have read the new FAQ entries about this.
This is particularly misleading:

8.7 - What are the privacy implications of Echo? [Direct link]

ProZ.com will only send your basic profile information (public name, profile number, and avatar) to Echo when you have explicitly requested it.

As it looks now, this "explicitly requesting" thing simply means clicking on the "Proceed" button in the info dialog that pops up when I click on the "Join the discussion" button.
The problem is that if I want to comment at all, I HAVE TO click on the "Proceed" button.

As it is now, the only option I have is either:
A) Agree to transmit my information to this third party
B) Not participate in the poll discussions.

I am a paying member because I like the functionality and options offered for members. It was a conscious choice, and so far I have not regretted it.
Based on my personal/business choice, I am not a member of any of the social networking sites this feature is attempting to link to. From the explanations given by site staff I understand if I don't have an account on those sites, no messages of mine would be posted there, so it seems there is no change for me, but it is not true.
If I participate in the discussion, my information would be transmitted to this third party "for processing", no matter what. That leaves my only choice "B", not to participate in polls anymore.

Therefore, I am really not happy about the site implementing this new "feature" that effectively limits my participation in a certain part of the site that should be available for all members.

Please re-think this approach - it is still Beta, so you have all kinds of options to remedy the situation. I vote for putting things back to as they were. There was nothing wrong with it.

What a shame Feb 9, 2010

I really cannot understand why this is being imposed on us. In the face of the universal condemnation of this innovation, all we are getting are twicks to the system. I never thought Proz was a democracy but I am surprised at its obstinacy in the face of the strong negative feelings of its customers.

Even if a Prozian does not post anything at Proz, posts from Proz polls and forums, partially integrated with all the social and anti-social networks of your choice, do generate spam, for instance, in groups of those networks etc. etc. and, if the email notification feature is activated, even in your email(s)... There are other ways of spamming and voilating privacy.

People can end up reading the same posts many times (unless special measures are taken) in today's already too integrated Internet environment. (Discussions will be spreading all over I-net it and... dissipating there).

The integration should not be opposed as such. However, any artificial/induced/ forced integration must be opposed.

The very idea of outsourcing/letting on lease of a basic process (Poll, Forum) seems to lead to a deadlock or surrender. This can be a wrong solution of a wrong problem -- and done badly (EXACTLY as in this particular case). Also, keep in mind that outsourcers care about their own (or already joint? - congrats!) business...

terrible Feb 11, 2010

I agree with everything that has been said before.

Why would you introduce a new system that doesn't have at least the same features as the old system???
And the fact that personal information is passed on to a third party, leaves me pretty uncomfortable as well. There's absolutely no need for that.

I will no longer participate in discussions with the new system.
