I don't know much about the ATA, but what I do know is positive!

I am a member of the union Gitte found was not very helpful. It was obligatory when I was employed: I did actually start my career in-house, which was very useful, no BS at all! Unfortunately the agency no longer exists, but I still have a network from it.

The union was helpful in arranging terms when I went freelance (when the agency went through a bad patch and had to dismiss most of its in-house translators). I have taken advantage of some of their services since.

I am also a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, which unfortunately is not as big and powerful as some professional associations, but they provide my credentials - I am currently a Chartered Linguist - and it is important in an unregulated profession like translation to stand out from the amateurs.

Clients need some way of vetting freelancers, and I can point out that the CIoL has done a certain amount of vetting already. The ATA will help you in the same way.

You have to fight/negotiate for your own rights as a freelancer. Some of us do quite well, and others struggle depending on lots of factors...

Good luck!
