Now that Twittering starts getting more popular, maybe it's time to enable ProZ-com users and members to insert a Twitter address into the contact details for each profile?

Currently, one can add several IMs' details to one's profile, though strangely ProZ.com believes translators use only one SIP service (namely Skype). My one question to you regarding Twitter would be whether it should be added to the IM dropdown list. In other words, is it an IM or is it something rather different.

I don't use Twitter myself, but I'm under the impression that it is more a blogging system than a message system. Can one use Twitter for confidential business communication between translator and client? If not, then I don't see why it should be on the user's profile as a method of communications. If Twitter is only a form of journaling, then perhaps it should be added to the section about a translator's web site. Your thoughts?

On a serious note, I'm not sure if Twitter should be added to Contact details, as it is intended for personal use, like connecting with friends etc. If I had a Twitter page, I'd probably put it on my Personal tab.

...to add ID data for different services and communication options. But I would agree to an optional free-text field in the address data to add this kind of information.

I love blackbirds though!

As for me I have just started with Twitter and really only have a rough idea about the features.

I would agree with you that it's more of a blogging system than a message system. You can decide what users you can "follow" (so you are his/her "follower") which means that you can read all postings this person has made. Also, on the other side, anyone can - without your consent - decide to become your follower, which then means that he/she can read anything you contribute with.

If necessary, as a special feature, you can always block a certain person who has himself decided to become your "follower", so this person will not see your posting in your timeline.

There is however a feature called "direct message" which means that only the recipient will be able to read the text. This feature similar to IM will not appear in the timeline.

I'm not sure about the business advantages with Tweeter yet - I mean, who's interested in postings like "have just made myself a cup of coffee" or "woke up with a cold". There are however also some news channels who contribute with interesting links to different news articles on their websites.

I have no idea if this is suitable for Contact details or Personal. Maybe it's about time to make a ProZ.com poll about a) usage of Twitter among the colleagues and b) how to make it best visible on a profile.

Awful. Exactly this whole "following" concept is why I have de-installed Messenger from my system. I don't want to be interrupted while I try to concentrate in challenging translations!

I'm not so sure, Erik. After I sent you a note about this bit of fun http://www.zappos.com/map/ I had a Twitter request from the CEO of that company asking me for permission to read my Tweets. Obviously a lot of tracking going on, which your clients might not want.

I prefer Skype.

Why?

IM function: e.g. Are you busy today?, Gimme 10, I'm on the phone, etc.

VOIP function: unlimited free voice communication between users. Someone from Proz site staff once called me for a long chat about something (no, I had not been misbehaving)!

File transfer: Once, a customer's mail client/server was not behaving. He sent me a 25 meg zipped file via Skype. Sometimes that can take time, depending upon server activity, but this time, it whistled through in about three seconds! I think that is the most important thing that Skype offers.

I understand your concerns, Chris.

However, my original posting was not to judge if Twitter is something to recommend or not, just a thought to give appropriate space for showing one's Twitter addresse in the profile. I cannot stand up and say that Twitter is the nonplusultra I have been waiting for for years

Well Erik, I went to and jumped into the Twitter nest, as you know.

A potential client nailed me after 1 day, and I found another one after 2 days of (semi)-smart searching. Like all other Web 2.0 stuff, Twitter needs learning; it has all sorts of its own and external tools so that you can get found, lost, categorised or even immortalised.

Not so much user-generated content - add-user generated programming.

I like the way you can control viewing options to keep private I opted to 'expose myself' so that I could get found. Naturally you cannot use it to transfer data but you can find people and then communicate directly (confidentially) with them, prior to establishing conventional contact.

How are you doing in the nest? Let's update here from time to time.

Some people tell their daily life but a few others will give valuable information about translation (resources, blogs, news items, DB and whatnot). I got a job offer recently (private message of course !) and a few translators helped me with business issues. It's only another way to expand your network among colleagues and clients.

Dunno if Twitter falls exactly under IM, but it's definitely another place where translators and their clients can increase their online presence and hence their chances of hooking up. I've seen plenty of job offers, translation offers, and terminology questions and immediate answers being tweeted on any day to know it's worth the trouble.

Now that is a brilliant idea. Miniblogging to the world on your site. Great marketing!

You can use that to publish links to your Proz forum comments, publish your 'Kudoz' wins' (or disagrees, post useful information you have discovered and generally show site visitors what a professional, entertaining and useful person you are.
