I'm a freelance interpreter based at Shanghai, China.

I've got several offers of abroad interpretation tasks.

One of them is accompanying one private Chinese company to go to Yenmen for business negotiation.

I'm concerning:

1. Is it safe to work in Yemen? Although only 10 days, during 15th to 25th of this June.

2. Will it affect my visa application of USA and Europe for my future task, since Yemen is one of the terrorism suspecte

3. What's the service charge should I quote? How about like USD300/day?

Do you happen to know about these? Really need your advice ASAP for my decision.

Thanks a million!

Your price may be low Jun 5, 2006

Dear Kevin,

I can not answer your questions 1 and 2, I simply do not know for sure.

As to pricing of your service I believe it is low. I personally charge 250 Euros per day (~=310-320 USD) for going to European countries. I would not consider Yemen for less than 400 Euros or 500 USD.

Best regards

About your Q1, my wife went there in an adventure trip about a 10/15 years ago and she got to know how assault rifles look like from very close. Then again it was an adventure trip, far off the beaten path...
But at that time, Yemen was supposed to be a safer place than it is now.
Maybe you coud visit websites from foreign affairs/diplomatic offices of various states to get an idea about the current issues there (namely foreigners abductions).
All the best,
Philippe

Given that it sounds like a risky country to visit, and it is likely to affect your chances of getting visas in the future, I think you should be asking for at least double what you think would be reasonable in a "safe" country, plus that they provide a comprehensive insurance policy.

What Clare said, and... Jun 6, 2006

...ask the American Consulate in China and perhaps also some European Consulates about any possible effect on your future visa applications if you do go to Yemen.

I believe it would never be worth any amount of money if it turns out that you will not be able to get visas to America and/or European countries in the future simply because of this short visit, but obviously this is entirely up to you.

Take care of yourself.
