Some 10 years ago I set up an OpenOffice database, where I have since then entered every single client, project and invoice, all connected. It's a bit of extra admin work, as I have to enter the project in the DB first and then copy it on the invoice, but with a large amount of projects and clients I find it makes keeping track easier.
