I could probably go up to 5K words if I did nothing else and the text were a novel rather than some artsy prose toying with the form, but I'd normally keep it at 2.5K max. In any case, more than 1.5K would need an urgency surcharge unless I regarded it as a sort of temporary full-time employment.
