Simultaneous word count on a number of documents? Autor vlákna: Veronica Coquard
|
Hi everybody,
I've been sent a load of short Word documents and asked to quote a price according to the word count on Word. As there are nearly a hundred documents, I am looking for a shortcut (not going through the "Properties" of each doc and much less opening each one) to make quick work of the quote.
Any tips?

Use a CAT tool? | Dec 5, 2012 |
If you have a CAT tool, it is very easy to do, you just select all the files you need to count.

I do have Trados Studio but I told the (direct) client ahead of time that the count would be carried out on Word.
Perhaps I could reconfigure Trados to reflect Word's count...
Oh dear, I sense a headache coming on!
Veronica Coquard Francie Local time: 22:00 francouzština -> angličtina + ... AUTOR TÉMATU Oh, never mind | Dec 5, 2012 |
...When you think about it, the only way they could correct the word count would be to do the count by themselves, which they haven't.
Studio it is. (Task time: 13 seconds!)

Dear Veronica,
You've certainly done your client a favour this way, as the Studio word count will certainly be in his favour.
Anyway, you could have merged the files within Word (that's only one step - just google for "merge word documents") and produce the word count this way. Should take more time than 13 s either.
Kind regards,
Erik

Veronica Coquard Francie Local time: 22:00 francouzština -> angličtina + ... AUTOR TÉMATU Thank you for your idea, Erik | Dec 5, 2012 |
In this case I'm afraid that would only muck things up, as there are some dozen folders each containing more than twenty documents that need to be translated while keeping the meticulous order in place.
Thank you for your idea anyway!

Hi Veronica,
Besides CAT tools, there are also other counting and invoicing tools available on the market, such as Practicount & Invoice, which I am using for comparison purposes.
Best regards,

In that case, you could do a search for Word documents including subfolders and copy the search results into a new folder. Then merge those. Just two more steps.
This is all only for counting purposes, of course.
Kind regards,

Word Counter is a Macintosh OS X application that performs a word count and a character count, but it can do much more. It can work alone or in conjunction with Apple's own TextEdit application via a small floating window. Text can be typed, pasted, or dragged into the window. Word Counter can automatically update the count based on a user-definable time interval. It also can perform bulk counts on multiple files and folders simply by dropping them onto the window.
Word Counter can count the number of times a particular word appears in a document. It can even create a sortable summary table of all words in the document, with the number of times each word appears and the length of each word. Word Counter can handle various file types including plain text (txt, text), rich text (rtf, rtfd), Hypertext Markup Language (htm, html), Microsoft Word (doc), Microsoft Word XML (wordml), and Apple's web archive (webarchive). This program may be useful for writing a manuscript or an abstract with a strict limit on the number of words or characters allowed.

I use http://www.anycount.com/ because it counts lots of different file formats, all files in a single folder, and you can adjust the settings to include headers and footers (but only counted once), which Word doesn't include at all.
It comes as a standalone application and also as part of Translation Office 3000.

There's also Count Anything, with a window that you can just drop all the files into or just drop a folder containing all the files to be counted. At http://ginstrom.com/CountAnything/.
