It depends on *who* owns the cloud Nov 8, 2010

Hi Claudio and all,

Just wanted to add that XTM International never and in no cases uses customer data whether it is TMs, Terminology or work files, no personal data and no project data is ever taken for other uses. It is the sole owenership of our customer and our subscription agreement details this. We will nevers sell or exchange this data.

While "vendor-neutral clouds" may be a good thing depending on the needs, the use of "proprietary clouds" means that one is basically giving away their work without having its counterpart on their hard drives.

This is the point at which, I think, opinions begin to diverge.

From my point of view, there is no absolute need to go to the cloud (*), only an emerging trend that serves the interests of some majors (no names here, but some send me advertisements for their SaaS every week) and - in my opinion - aims at leaving IT users with light clients: no HD, no apps, only server-based tools.

I dare to think that this is not a progress.

(*) Plus not going there will avoid us... making the way back to our PC's.

Compatible clouds where you can extract your own segments?

The worse to come Nov 8, 2010

thanks for your input Heinrich

anyway, giving a copy of your TM to your customer is completely different than loose the control on your TMs working on the client's remote server ...

and about the usefulness of TMs in MT training, do a look here
https://www.tausdata.org/index.php/visitor-center/translators

to me, TAUS is another way to "steal" ours memories with a lark mirror, not so different from remote CATs ...

Claudio

It all boils down to one simple fact: forcing translators to wash their hands of their TMs upon project delivery. In other words, one would remain without TMs or glossaries, etc.). The worse to come yet; in a couple of years, there would be a fierce (trados-like) marketing campaign for buying a massive MT tool which works miracles. An MT Tool which we ourselves had originally created and built (via and in our clients' servers).

I think, in a few years, the use-client-server approach will gain ground. The only way to keep your TMs is to translate your projects using your favourite CAT tool and copy-paste your target version into Client's CAT Server.
