For the last 5 years (since my youngest daughter returned from Mexico, where she was working) we have spent New Year’s Eve together at my home. Neither of us enjoys “compulsory” celebrations. So, we have a late dinner: oysters for me and a vegan dish for her and then we wait for midnight and as the clock strikes 12 we eat 12 raisins one by one at each stroke of the clock (a Portuguese tradition) and watch the fireworks light up the skies…

P.S. How much money goes up in smoke in the name of tourism? I always wonder if all this money couldn't be put to better use…
