We should do it regularly Apr 4, 2025

Talking with a translation agency owner some time ago (I contacted him to ask for a WWA), he told me he doesn't really use Proz that much, because many translators' profiles are not updated, so they seem to be inactive and he wouldn't reach out to them.

If the client doesn't use Proz that much... Apr 4, 2025

...then updating a profile doesn't seem to make much sense now, does it?

I suppose, based on experience, that different clients use different resources to find translators. Once a company VP called me on the phone after several attempts at finding a translator in my language pair. We both resided in the state of Ohio, USA. No, this person had no idea of the translators directory hosted by the American Translators Association (ATA).

No, this person had no idea of the translators directory hosted by the American Translators Association (ATA).

I also suppose that some translators find the task of updating their profile in different directories and platforms rather tiresome and, sometimes, pointless.

What to do, what to do...

Whenever I can Apr 4, 2025

I usually update my profile whenever I can, to include any new activity (webinar, conference, course), or knowledge I learn, whether I get certification or not.

For example, I'll be attending a workshop on literary translation by the end of this month, so I know I'll update my profile after that.

I updated it one year ago. Apr 4, 2025

I would like to update it this year, but I have other things to do. Responding to a colleague's argument about whether doing this is pointless or not, I have to say that every updated profile can help you to meet a new potential client when you never expect it.

I had the experience of creating a Google business account one year ago, and 2 great clients reached out to me recently asking for Spanish lessons. It was a great surprise because I made this account really fast, but I inclu

I had the experience of creating a Google business account one year ago, and 2 great clients reached out to me recently asking for Spanish lessons. It was a great surprise because I made this account really fast, but I included my recent website so they could check that I teach Spanish as a foreign language.

What I learned was that you never know who is reading your profile on any platform you work on.
