Storms and extreme weather events are becoming more common and worse in my area (Valencia, Spain), like the terrible one we had at the end of October. They increasingly involve power outages, which affects my work. | | | | | Yes, somewhat | Feb 6, 2025 |
A lot of translations I have done over the last 5/10 years have been about climate change... | | | | Philippe Etienne Španělsko Local time: 12:21 Člen angličtina -> francouzština + ...
I don't feel comfortable working at temperatures beyond 28°C in my study. My shutter and window positioning routine in the summer follows the sun to try and prevent the house from heating up, but it goes only so far.
Because the outside temperature exceeds 40°C more often in the summer, I have to turn the A/C on for longer periods.
I didn't raise my rates to cover these additional energy expenses, and full insulation overhaul would be too expensive.

When I’m camping at campsites, solar panels are not powerful enough to keep my laptop charge going forever, so we need to use the electric plugs too, in the middle of a green forest full of life, ants, etc. Too bad.
Yes, ever since climate activists started blocking the roads, commuting takes longer.

| Impact of Severe Rains on Work Availability | Feb 6, 2025 |
Yes. Severe rains in my country often cause power outages and, at times, internet disruptions, making it impossible for me to work. | | | | Philippe Etienne Španělsko Local time: 12:21 Člen angličtina -> francouzština + ... | Extreme events | Feb 6, 2025 |

Valencia floods were horrifying.
Grid reliability may become an issue indeed. In October 2023, winds up to 154 km/h measured at the US air base 30 km away left us without power for a few days. Many large, old trees in the area couldn't handle it and part of our (already weakened) perimeter wall collapsed.

If these are the worst effects you have experienced so far you can consider yourself very lucky.
People around the world already suffering from fires, flooding and deadly heatwaves are not so fortunate.
But we are all going to see the effects of climate change in our lives, probably sooner than a lot of people are expecting. | | | | expressisverbis Portugalsko Local time: 11:21 angličtina -> portugalština + ... | Yes, last year... | Feb 6, 2025 |
In September last year, central and northern Portugal were ravaged by fires. I think it was the worst year since 2017.
The air was unbreathable, the sky very grey and you couldn't open the windows... the temperatures, which were already high, got much higher.
I saw the flames up close and... people lost their homes, their jobs, their animals and even their families... firefighters killed in the line of duty...

It was a terrible and frightening week, even for me, because the fire was very close to the building where I live, and I couldn't get my work done as usually...
I hope I don't have to live through this kind of situation again.
I was too scared, but I still had to find the strength to fulfil my work commitments.
From what I can remember, I think it was this situation that affected my work routine the most.

Cecilia Mattos (X) Brazílie Local time: 07:21 angličtina -> portugalština + ... | Sea level advancing and too many floods | Feb 6, 2025 |
In Brazil we have been experienced too many floods in diferent regions in the past 5 years or more, and the sea is advancing somehow, as we see the need to put a great amount of rocks by the beach to protect the shore and the buildings close to the beach from the waves and high tides. | | | | Vanessa Dias Brazílie Local time: 07:21 angličtina -> portugalština + ...
During some hot waves that happened in Brazil last year I had a hard time concentrating. | | | | Kay Denney Francie Local time: 12:21 francouzština -> angličtina | CLIMATE DISRUPTION (change is too neutral) | Feb 18, 2025 |
During the scorching summer of 2022 I couldn't take my dog out between about 10.30 and 7.00 pm because the pavement would have burned his paws, so I had to rearrange my schedule and take him out first thing. This kind of made it harder for me because taking him out is usually a very welcome break in the day.
And I'm only too aware that it's nothing to complain about compared to what other people here are experiencing.

I see that a staggering 5.7% of presumably well-educated translators refuse to accept the reality of climate disruption (ok they clicked on "I don't *believe* in climate change" but if not believing in it is more a matter of not wanting to understand)
I first became a climate activist in the 1970s and I so so wish we had got it all wrong. I would much rather have had to admit being wrong than saying "I told you so". ▲ Collapse | | | | | Stran v tématu: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Has climate change ever affected your work routine? | Trados Business Manager Lite | Create customer quotes and invoices from within Trados Studio
