Having more clients gives more stability, but it wouldn't be to much avail if those clients just send tiny projects. IMO, most convenient and lucrative are big projects with lenient deadlines, interspersed with smaller projects from many different clients.

This is something I see as a basic problem with the whole world: everything and everybody wants to grow. The asker didn't even include the option of not wanting to grow. I, for one, don't want to grow, improve, widen, etc. my work: I want to live my life quietly and freely, want to do what I can without much pressure, want to learn what I still can and want to learn or experience things as long as possible. Otherwise, I don't need more, or newer, "better", "faster", or anything that drives the w... to improve your income is to diversify... outside of the translation business.
Unless you have a sporting chance to get into some of the few "niche markets" that will still stay alive for the foreseeable future.
Otherwise the future doesn't look very bright ...
Plenty of opportunities outside of the translation business where being bi / tri lingual is a huge advantage.
