I've never felt the need to hide my income, so if people ask for it I normally reveal it. I don't care if people earn more or less than me. Generally spoken I only care about poverty and extreme wealth, which both shouldn't exist in my book.

I chose "It varies", but on second thought I don't think anybody other than banks or surveys has ever asked me to reveal my income. People ask if I am having a lot of work, getting enough work, doing ok financially etc. but never how much I earn.

I say "It varies", basically because it varies.

Sometimes people are curious about how much you can make as a freelance translator. I still remember the face of my wife - girlfriend at that time when I told her my average monthly income. She was happily surpised. That was 10 years ago... Income is more irregular nowdays.

Are you talking about a random scammer? About someone who is considering translation as a career option? About the national tax administration?
I can't remember anyone ever asking me what my income is, except in an official capacity (banks, insurance companies, tax authorities). My family and friends know I have a fixed income (my monthly pension) + a very variable income (my translation business)…

... yet it happens every week. And 'it varies', of course.

I don't think anyone has ever asked me that question.
The only people who know it are my bank and my accountant, apart from them, nobody else has anything to do with what I earn.
Siobhán Fulton Spojené státy americké Local time: 04:35 němčina -> angličtina | Polite people don't ask about that... | Sep 25, 2024 |
... at least in my experience, unless they're a banker or tax official.

That's what I say to most people when asked. Some friends and trusted colleagues know more details.

.... it simply is nobody's business how much I earn. Why should I reveil it, or better said, who cares, and why?
Thinking about it: strange question.
But the Poll was: 'What is your reaction?' Well, I'll tell them on a friendly tone that I earn enough. I am still around.

Let's face it: it's a very un-Dutch question. I'm generally more open about it personally than the other people in our country. But there are other countries and cultures where it's quite normal to talk about these things even with strangers, so it's not a very strange question to ask on ProZ IMO.

Depends on the context. I'll say "more than when I worked at the agency, while working fewer hours" to former colleagues, "Not nearly enough given the level of knowledge and language required" to youngsters who are wondering whether to become a translator, "much, much less than you" to obnoxious boors who are asking because they feel the need to feel superior, and "none of your business" otherwise.
