Although we have been moving towards a cashless society, it is unlikely that cash will die out any time soon.

I wonder if in a plastic free world, the only plastic left will be… money?

I hope not, despite the move towards "cashless society" being pushed by some governments. The world isn't ready for fully digital economies yet, as evidenced by the IT outage that caused chaos at airports around the world just the other day.

Governments want it, so it will come about.

It's true that we need to get rid of plastic, Maria Teresa. There are some very good imitations of plastic now, of plant origin so presumably biodegradable. The little boxes I bought for my soap and solid shampoo are excellent (made from waste plant matter).

Not in my lifetime.

What happens after I don't worry about. It's too scary, and not only concerning money.
There are many other things that will change drastically, and I am glad I don't have to deal with it.

They're trying Jul 21, 2024

However, I doubt that they will succeed in removing all cash from this planet. Too many people (I,for one) love to feel cash in their hands. Although I do use my debit card quite frequentlly, I still wouldn't want to miss cash. Whatever might happen after my time has exprired, who knows?

What would happen to beggars? Jul 21, 2024

I make all my charitable donations via bank transfer or credit cards on an annual basis.
Nowadays I rarely carry coins when traveling in the US, and maintain minimal amounts of cash on a daily basis. I haven't been importuned by any street people who take debit/credit cards.

...otherwise I don't know how to pay the next empowerment seminar on Cyprus this summer, which will raise my translation income to an extraordinary high level.

It's about options Jul 22, 2024

People just don't like having options removed from them, even if they use digital payment methods most of the time.
So, as long as you don't think you're old school for feeling weird in that nice hipster coffee shop that only accepts digital payments (but cannot handle cryptocurrencies), all is not lost!

That lady waiting in line right ahead of you Jul 22, 2024

She has cash. In fact, she only has the biggest banknotes available (RUB 5000 over here), so there's no change and the cashier has to go to another shop to get it. People waiting in line behind me never find themselves in a similar situation because I don't use cash (and if I'm buying something, I always toss it in my bag very quickly so they don't have to wait). Does any of it mean that cash will be phased out in the foreseeable future? I don't think so. Where will the money printer go when it can't go brrrr anymore?Collapse

For the "energy capital of the world" to be left with no power - no street or house lights, no air conditioning under 95 F, no banks, no ATMs, no internet, barely working phones and hot spots, no mail service and cash only at the places that have been opened at all, for 3 to 10 days depending on the area. It's been no fun to leave my place at midnight with miner's light on my forehead, reach the car and drive through the pitch-black neighborhood without a single light in view for 3 miles before getting to Mission Control for the night shift, a safe haven with power and AC. I was so lucky to have my rotation at MCC scheduled for that week. These guys have all imaginable and unimaginable backup but it was open for the essential personnel only. Here is your technology:-) It takes some unpleasant practical knowledge to fully comprehend what it means to be a hostage of our own doing.

We have been promised more fun with up to Cat IV before the end of this hurricane season. Generators are flying off the shelves. Too bad windmills won't help:-). Ripped and flying blades in quantities necessary to support 5 million inhabitants of the industrial city, if possible at all, would kill thousands and cause terrifying damage and destruction.

Hang on to your cash!
