Why do you think in-house professionals ( I guess you mean in-house translators) who understand marketing are the highest earners? For me, an in-house translator get a fixed salary whether or not they understand marketing. | | | |
Inherited (in the "time of piece") connections rule the world. The number and amount or mastery of your bids don't matter. If you win a job, it's an open or hidden fruit of connections. | | | |
These days it’s probably those who use MT and AI to churn out vast quantities of work very quickly.
Previously it was those who charged a lot because they were good. | | |

Undoubtedly, who have more connections. And those who have prooves in the foreign language, to show the agency/company more than real quality for a end user. And, also, who always keep things simple to understand for the Project Managers. | | | |

As others said, specialization and quality matter, but I think good communication skills also count for a lot, including networking skills and the ability to present yourself and to act in a professional manner = reliability. Clients need to feel that they can build on you. | | |

As in any business, the best-paid director is the Finance Director. And the best-paid translators are those specialised in finance. Simply because the Finance Department looks after its own. | | | |
