Yes Jul 1, 2024

I was a university teacher for 17 years. For me, that's enough.

I like to pass on what I know informally, but formal teaching isn't for me…

I used to tutor for about a year while studying myself and noticed that I lacked the patience to teach.

Other way round... Jul 2, 2024

I taught teenagers for thirty years and then had to change - in my new country, switching to translation was necessary.

Yes Jul 2, 2024

Sort of. Before getting into translation, I was a TEFL trainer for roughly a decade. And I still kept some classes going during the transition period. In fact, one business I used to teach in-company classes for is now my best and most regular translation client.

Not as such Jul 2, 2024

I was press-ganged into teaching on a postgraduate translation programme in the 90s, but I would never choose to teach and it would never match my income from translation.

Unless it was one of those $699 online trainings from Keki & Associates.

Waste of time if you need money Jul 2, 2024

For us, in financial terms, teaching is the least rewarding profession in the world unless you happen to be a recent Nobel Prize winner, an Emeritus professor (this title does not always work!), or a retired President or Prime Minister of a major country (even this title does not always work, either).

Yes but not in translation Jul 2, 2024

I've taught several courses on jewellery making and design. I'll be off to France for a week in November to help some students with a project. It can be stressful, but also very rewarding.

I don't think I'd want to go into teaching full-time, but it would depend on where, the staff, salary, benefits, etc. I wouldn't want to teach languages or translation - I'm often asked if I'd like to teach English, but it's never really been an attractive option for me.

I did the opposite... Jul 2, 2024

I taught teenagers from 13 to 17 for thirty-six years and then decided that enough was enough. Then I discovered the marvellous world of translation and other language services.

Not only considered it Jul 2, 2024

I have taught both German and English for several years, generating a decent additional income. Then these "companies" sprang up like fungus and started their campaigns with dumping prices, so I stopped and directed my focus more towards translating and writing. It is rather unlikely that I will start teaching again as a second income.

I was going to say No, but then I remembered I was teaching Latvian at Inalco in Paris. To my great surprise, they had an entire program for it. It was just a couple hours a week over 10 years ago and the hourly rate was even better than what I charge now, but for some French reason I had to wait until the end of semester to receive it. Then, after months of poverty, I was suddenly rich.

I have also helped some kids to learn English as a student, but otherwise no, I have not considered it and have no intentions to do that.

Not really because I suffer a lot from anxiety and low self-confidence so standing in front of a classroom would be very difficult for me.

Yes, but not in linguistics Jul 2, 2024

I had a few short stints teaching languages and translation, but these were mostly altruistic undertakings, as the income was negligible. What I am seriously considering is teaching people to fly. Won't get rich doing that, either, but flying gives me more pleasure than languages.

Yes Jul 2, 2024

Yes but mostly because that is my first profession. I studied English teaching and believe you must love it if that's what you want to do for a living. Money is bad, and you must work a lot outside your regular schedule.
