Not usually, but on occasion, in special circumstances, it might happen.

In this case, what I do is say what my rate is per word and that I’ll give the client a precise quote when I have all the data I need. Anyway, over the years I have quoted a lump sum for a few large jobs and quite recently I was asked to send a quote for a potential job having between 150 and 200 pages, so I've calculated an average per page based on the words of another job I've done for the same client and gave the client a provisional quote...

This would mean that the one who provides a quote also provides and specifies the word count and text length (what's a word length?).
I assume what this poll asks is:
Do you provide a quote for freelance jobs whose description does not specify the word count? Or "in which the word count was not specified".

I am booked for most jobs weeks or months in advance, so I don't know the exact length or wordcount until the job arrives.
Of course, agencies already know my rates per word/hour, as do direct clients in theory, but I don't think they care about price.

I understand this question is directed to job posters, since they are the ones with this sort of information (word count of the project), therefore, being an outsourcer, my answer is "other".

In such cases, I provide a word rate (a range if also the type and complexity of the source text is unclear).

The advantages of this approach are, I believe, fairly obvious: 1) direct clients normally want to know what a job will cost them, without having to pick up a calculator to work it out themselves, 2) it makes it a bit more difficult for them to compare my price with those of others who ask for ... The advantages of this approach are, I believe, fairly obvious: 1) direct clients normally want to know what a job will cost them, without having to pick up a calculator to work it out themselves, 2) it makes it a bit more difficult for them to compare my price with those of others who ask for less, 3) it makes it easier for me to raise or lower my rates, 4) I can apply different rates for different jobs for the same client (I vary my rates by over 400% with one client - advertising jobs can cost at least four times as much as letters to suppliers, for example). After the first few quotes, they just pay what's on my invoice and that's it.
The one agency I work with has been paying the same rate since 2006 so they know what I charge and don't ask me for quotations. A few years ago they tried to lower the rate but I refused after the first job and they've been with me ever since. ▲ Collapse

For agencies, they already know the wordcount and my rate has been negotiated in advance.
For direct clients, they know me and they don't really care about wordcount. I mostly do tell them the word count, and price "at my usual rate". If I'm applying a minimum rate, I don't use the word "minimum", I'll just say that since it's a small job I'll just bill one hour at my hourly rate. It's the same amount, and clients don't quibble with that for some reason.

Yes, this is what I meant. Of course it is not our quote that specify the word count of the job.
