And I'm not interested in it either. The more business-like and neutral the relationship with my clients, the better. For everything else there is my private life.

When I was working as a sworn translator in Brussels, I got an occasional box of chocolates and once a big bouquet of flowers (an urgent adoption process). One of my agency clients uses to send me a small gift every Christmas (a coaster, a pen, a mouse pad…), but it’s the only one.

In addition to my invoice payments:
- A word of thanks and some praise for my work regularly.
- A healthy and long-lasting professional relationship with my clients/agencies.
That's all I can have and it's very rewarding for me in many ways.

I sometimes get credited in the games I translate, and I actually got a few goodies from a publisher that was very satisfied with my work. Not that I am ever going to wear a red T-shirt with the name of a game I have no interest in playing, but it was a really nice gesture nonetheless.
Other than that, I was once "Translator of the Month" for one of my agency clients and got a light blue hoodie for that which I'm also never going to wear...

Since I translate for musicians and record labels, I get invited to concerts and they also send me their CDs. One group sent me a postcard from their international tour last year.

Since I translate for artists and galleries, I get invited to openings too. There's a prestigious Paris museum I translate the exhibition documents for, and I do wish I'd get free tickets to see them, but it's through an agency so they don't even know me.

There's a PR firm I translate for, and they invite me to some of the events I translate for, with fun stuff like treasure hunts and once they designed a "time travel machine" that took you through the history of their client (a car manufacturer).

Whenever I work on books I get a free copy or two or three.

At the agency we used to get free admission to the trade fairs we translated for, except for the most interesting one, the Salon du Chocolat.

Not sure about Trips meaning May 24, 2024

Like taking translators on outdoor picnics and hiking separately from the trip to an assignment? - No.

This is on the interpretation side. I am eternally grateful to my clients for allowing me to purchase tickets and book hotels and cars with my own cards - they reimbursed in 30 days together with my wages. That alone gave me x5 (American Express) and x6 (Marriott) points on each dollar spent, on top of the points for each day/mile completed (x10 with Marriott totaling x16). They also allowed personal stopovers on the same ticket anywhere in the world with the return date a week or so after the business part. As long as I stayed within the approved air fare budget, it was fine.

On the translation side when is was flourishing here - mostly generous Christmas parties and gifts from the local agencies. Postcards from the remote ones.

Directly from the end clients - gym bags, T-shirts, 2 windbreakers, calendars, pins, mugs, USB-drives and universal adapters, 1 nice Swiss knife and a lot of wining and dining on locations.

Certificates of Merit from NASA and a few unexpected and unsolicited reference letters from other clients, which have been presented as a gift during closing meetings.

Sounds interesting May 24, 2024

Hi, Kay, all this sounds interesting, let me know if you need any help into Spanish or Catalan
I felt very much identified with the museum comment, how good would it be to get an annual pass every year as a gift.

A couple of times May 24, 2024

A couple of times got small bonuses ($50-100) and gifts (coffe mug, coffee, chocolates) around the Christmas time. But these were direct clients.

Indecent proposal May 24, 2024

I was once offered 100 GBP for referring my end clients to an agency. See the agency's email:

bdff

Next, they offered 250 GBP for my backside, which I vehemently rejected. I mean turning greedy is one thing, but turning nasty? That's totally unacceptable. You gotta draw the line somewhere.

Oh darling, how absolutely marvellous!

I once translated Swedish pop star Louise Hoffsten’s record contract and I asked to be paid in VIP tickets and they were like as if.

The closest I get today is to translate about how the combination of Eurovision and Taylor Swift is likely to cause Swedish inflation to spike this month.

But I have wine and I have cats, so I can’t complain.
