Dear colleagues,

I am planning to buy a new computer in the States, but I also am concerned that the OS with the computer is an English environment (they bundle with Win 7 pro OS). My language pair is English-traditional Chinese.

I searched online; it is said that when using the English OS version, some garbage characters will appear in the Chinese file; or if you installed the traditional Chinese version software, it cause problems too. And Win 7 pro doesn’t offer language options unless you buy the Ultimate or Enterprise version. (I also searched Proz.com, there is a similar topic http://www.proz.com/forum/windows_operating_systems/190226-change_of_language_when_upgrading_win_.html. It seems that upgrading Win pro to a higher version is the only solution?)

So I wonder, how do Eng-Zh translators in the States or in non-Chinese speaking countries solve this issue? Do you just upgrade your OS, or you actually buy a Chinese version of OS? Any suggestion is welcome and thanks.

set your default language Aug 23, 2012

Some applications, such as InDesign, can't display CJK characters correctly in English OS environment. To fix it, you can change default language of your OS to Chinese using Regional and language settings (Windows XP, another name used in Win7) as follows:

Click on Advanced tab.
Choose Chinese (xxx) from the language selection pull-down menu.
Click on OK to save change.

Thanks for the information Aug 24, 2012

Hi Shang,

Thanks for the information. May I make a further confirmation?
Do you mean that even if I use the Win 7 Pro English version, I can just change the language setting?
It doesn't matter if it is an Ultimate or Enterprise version (which support different languages) or not?
If so, then that's might be the solution. Thank you!

This applies to all MS OSes Aug 24, 2012

This setting applies to all MS OSes. I'm using English version of Windows XP with default language set to Simplified Chinese. I set it to Traditional Chinese if necessary.

Another thing you should do is to install the input method you like.
