Interesting though it is, esoteric discussion on what N.I is or is not is not particularly relevant to:

"Italian translator moving to the UK: taxes",

not to mention, verging on the political.

A gentle reminder that further such semantics may not see the light of day!

Tax and living expenses Feb 27, 2012

Hi Alessandra

Recently, I was considering a job in England (instead of freelancing) and asked a friend who lives in Surrey (South East) about tax/living costs just to get an idea of how much I would need to earn to make a fair living. I thought maybe his answer might be helpful to you:

You pay about 1/3 of your income in tax and NI combined.
Rates about £100 per month
Rent about £450-600 per month
Gas, electricity, water, phone, internet combined abo

Gas, electricity, water, phone, internet combined about £200 per month
Food about £200 per month
Travel costs, insurance, clothes etc. another £200 per month

These figures are, of course, all variables, but maybe a rough guideline.

Cheers

In London and the South-East:

You pay about 1/3 of your income in tax and NI combined.
You could pay about £50-150 per month in Council Tax
Rent about £1000 per month for a one-bedroom flat.
Gas, electricity, water, phone, internet combined about £100 per month
Food about £200 per month (per person, assuming you never eat out at restaurants)
Travel costs, insurance, clothes etc. another £200 per month
