If this IS a scam (and it sure smells like one) then these scammers are getting more and more sophisticated. The website appears legit, as well as the email address! The only real giveaway is the poor English... | | | Signe Golly Dánsko Local time: 22:48 angličtina -> dánština + ... If it is, then I (sort of) fell for it | Jan 22, 2011 |
Got the same one, English-Danish (twice, actually). However, I turned it down and pointed out that it would be unethical for me to attempt to translate this very specialized medical text when I have no background in that field. So I guess I'm off the radar.

Did they send you a money order in excess of the amount due? Just curious - seems like they're going through a lot of effort to make it seem legitimate! ok, I will try to explain short what happens and how I know Would it be possible for you to elaborate on the nature of the scam? - yes Did you do the work and then not get paid? - yes, workload came in two lots, the first one 82 thousand words!!!! and the second to the same"project" about at 40% done and delivered Did they send you a money order in excess of the amount due?- I wish, they had. Vietnam is a one way street for hard currency. No, they did after 7 days after complete delivery send an email - thank you for nice work, money is transferred - it was actually august last year - nothing arrived so far. We have an incasso and a detectei after them. We are an IT company, web wise. We did track already before, just as security their web registration details as well as the ip addresses, where the emails are send from. Just by chance, it is the same, PRIVATE registration name, SAME PLACE, BOTH DOMAINS, this one and SAMA-TRANSLATIONS, same registration day. Just by chance, the CONTENT IS 100% the SAME. The job SIZE (82000 words) and dreamed DEAD LINE is EQUAL. A few days, the "client will have send some more files, or you can't get paid..) and the final is around 132 words, if history repeats. By chance, on August 21st was the last response from them - on August 22nd, this on went live (it was parked) it is only a different (free) joomla template and the "new" (because parked) name went live. Only different is - before they named them self BASMA (which could be a ntive name, like Jim in States) and now, they now write very shallow- and signing with a not matching name ZAK. Even the IP address of the email sending pc = identical. Just curious - seems like they're going through a lot of effort to make it seem legitimate!- no, I am sorry, this host cost in the basic package US$ 10 a year, changing the website template = 5 minutes work, possible registered a dozen- plus domains, makes with discount a 10er a year, per name, makes about 12 names, waste 2 or 3 per year, makes it about 50 USD a year. Should somebody taking that job, please let me know, when you are getting paid. I did post that also on another translators board. I had two responses from Poland- both got the full translation, and one German response from Florida. They got the job awarded, same as my German CO, who did bid on under his credentials. I really believe in coincidences. But not really in such a number. That is a 99.9999% match.

Thanks, IT Bizz, for taking the time to elaborate. Advanced payment scam | Jan 29, 2011 |
I have also received several requests for large translation jobs usually written in a strange English wording and with very large delays to complete. I played along with a couple of them and requested an advanced payment for part of the job as a condition to start the work. Several days later I received a check in the mail for an amount that was 5 times my total quote for the total job, with instructions to pay the amount in excess to someone else who was helping the requester (from some African country) to put together a seminar on racism (this was also the subject matter of the document to be translated). I don’t need to tell you that the check (issued over a known British bank) had no provision. This scheme is known as the Advanced Payment Con, and judging by the number of requests I have received these con artists seem to be very active. ▲ Collapse | | | Olaf Schutze (X) Vietnam angličtina -> němčina + ... ... and what | Mar 16, 2011 |
does it actually bring for such a scammer? Running a scam, is usually for profit or win. Looking here in the replies: - cheques without any value - postal expenses - fake websites - costs for forum/website membership - auctioning/promoting a fake business to get hold of the files .. but where is the win or profit? Who takes it, when and where? | | | I received a similar e-mail | Jul 2, 2011 |

Total word count for this project is 189695 words needed within this month. I smell a scam, does anybody smell the same or received the same for other language combinations? I know from their e-mail that they intend to get this job done into other 15 languages.<...
