My clients rarely ring my mobile but it's a valuable means of communication if I'm not at my desk. All my customers have it and I certainly have never regretted giving it out. I don't get plagued with calls. | | |
Because I so rarely use my mobile, and so often forget to take it with me, it's a far less reliable way of contacting me than email - for which reason I regret ever having handed out the number in the first place! | | |
because I do not lose any potential work that way. With a schoolchild (and dogs), I am often out of the office so my customers can get in touch by mobile. most agencies will simply ring the next translator on the list if you are not immediately contactable, so having the mobile phone is essential for me. | |

My all clients are sincere. They make call only on very urgent task. One or two use to call on sending every project starting related email. That is beneficial because sometimes I am not online so it is better then I confirm soon just after attending call. Some use to send text sms for project alert. That is also better. Still there is not any point which tease me and force to think, why I gave my number. Whereas I use to give mobile no. to my every client because I have added my mobile no. and... I gave one client my phone numbr and from then on he insisted on calling me at all times of day and night, whether I was on holiday or not, to demand oral translation of complex texts that he would read out to me and then write down as I dictated to him, always of course preceded by the expression "it's only a couple of lines". I stopped answering the phone and was more than happy to lose the client. | |

Yep Julian, this has happened to me too. I wish they'd realize urgent projects don't get done any quicker when both my landline and mobile are ringing off the hook! (Why haven't you answered this email from 2 minutes and 53 seconds ago? - Aaaargh!). I definitely practise call screening when I need/want to. I've definitely regretted giving a customer my Skype details too, that's for sure!

When I worked as a sworn translator (I no longer do), I frequently got phone calls (fixed line) at inconvenient hours: very early in the morning, very late at night, during the weekend… | |

Hi Julian, do we happen to have the same PM? I have someone like this as well, someone who uses all available channels, including Skype and the home phone number...just to ensure that I've received the email sent to me in the middle of the night. Even though my AM takes care of this, I'm still awake then. I no longer publish my phone number because I kept getting calls at all hours from people wanting me to translate birth certificates and other personal documents (I live in Florida) who would not take no for an answer or calls from people asking my advice on how to become a translator, etc. | | | Ali Alsaqqa Spojené státy americké Local time: 05:57 angličtina -> arabština
An oversees "new" client called me at 3:00 AM for over 20 minutes discussing a project, and a week later he chose another translator and we never had business again.
