I see no link between frugality and success as a freelance translator.

I don't see the link either.

Is that required from lawyers, scientists, architects or medical doctors, too? They probably went to the same university as the translator.

Never thought about it. [Edited to add:] So I suppose that is a de facto 'NO!'

.. profligate spending might serve as a better incentive to work hard and be successful!

If anything frugality is probably an obstacle to being successful as a freelancer.

But I think that anyone who is posting such a question probably shouldn't be a translator and / or run a business.

First, I agree that there's no connection. Second, I am the opposite of frugal: if I have money, I spend it. And I consider myself successful. I work for high rates. If I worked for low rates and had a family support, then frugality might might be a useful trait.
Wrong question... What do you mean actually? Save your money? To be modest in your rates? To avoid every-and-one offer from any client?
Can't see the connection between being frugal and being successful!

To echo the other comments here, why would you have to be frugal to be successful? Smart people tend not to spend their money wastefully. The implied alternative would appear to be something akin to the plot from the film Brewster's Millions (which could be fun but, ultimately, unethical).
What exactly do you mean?

Is frugality necessary? What, exactly, is a successful translator? What is success? (I think I know what a translator is.) That's the problem with working for two hours in the morning, sustained only by pear juice instead of coffee. I get floored by a ProZ poll! Edited for a gaffe, because I am a flawed human being. Floored twice now. My third cup of coffee is going down really wel... See more Is frugality necessary? What, exactly, is a successful translator? What is success?
