I normally ask if everything was okay, and only once in a while. Other than that, if they dont give feedback, then everything was probably okay and if there were issues, then they get in touch with me and we sort it out.

Master class May 18, 2011

Only a couple of my clients give me feedback, but it is enormously useful. Constructive criticism is like a master class, but you don't have to pay for it!

I prefer not to think about the one instance of destructive criticism I had to tolerate....

Limited positive feedback May 18, 2011

I would have to agree. I find I get very little positive feedbaack..... although many clients who use me over and over again so presumably they like what I do. I do find some of my regular clients send quite lovely personal thank you notes at Christmas time which is quite a nice way of giving positive feedback but without heaping on the praise after every job. I have also found quite a lot of clients are willing to add comments to websites such as this one about particular jobs and my performance generally so I guess that's a positive thing.

I've only had negative feedback a couple of times but I actually find it very useful as it helps me to refine my writing style etc. Of course, you do get some clients who just enjoy being rude and trying to get a discout for no reason whatsoever.... I tend not to work with them again!

I do get feedback now and then, which is appreciated, but in the case of those who don't directly provide feedback, the very fact that they keep coming back time and time again speaks for itself as far as I'm concerned.

Not enough - May 18, 2011

for me ... although I do get some, mostly good.
Acknowledgement is always important to me, whether it's someone audibly enjoying a meal I've prepared or a client being impressed with a translation.
I can just never get enough positive input, finding it motivating, and my (usually embarrassed) reaction to negative feedback is also revealing, as it shows how sensitive I am to criticism. My friend says this is clear evidence of an inferiority complex, but I prefer to think of it as

I sometimes get feedback from agencies.
From end clients if anything, questions.

No comments and repeat business = positive feedback May 19, 2011

In line with what Michael, Medway, and Victoria write, my assumption is that, if I receive no feedback, neither the agency nor the end client had a problem with my work.

I also question whether any form of direct feedback is a reasonable expectation on the part of a freelance contractor. It would seem more useful to turn to a mentor or trusted colleague for such evaluation.

I also question whether any form of direct feedback is a reasonable expectation on the part of a freelance contractor. It would seem more useful to turn to a mentor or trusted colleague for such evaluation.

In addition, I've never felt comfortable with asking for feedback, or with making overly solicitous inquiries as to whether a client was happy with what I did. I think that doing these kinds of things betrays a certain insecurity on the part of a translator and can therefore be downright counterproductive. I always ask clients to contact me if they have any questions or concerns. If I hear nothing back from them (and, especially, if I later get repeat business from them) then I assume that everything was okay.
