I'm currently working on the subtitles for the Canadian 2015 web series Coded. Shae, an idealistic teacher, embarks on a new job teaching five tenth grade misfits with behavioral issues who truly don't give a s***. As he gets drawn into his students' personal lives, he finds himself in murky, ethical territory. Working on the subtitles for Greenfield, an Australian 2015 web series. Its gritty, raw depiction of rural West Australian life has a strong immersive effect, and its tension is truly contagious. It's stressing me out a bit! But in this case, that's a good thing.
(edited) I recently finished working on the Spanish subtitles and dubbing script for a few episodes of Hip Hop: The songs that shook America, an AMC documentary series that focuses on groundbreaking songs that were pivotal to the evolution of American music and culture. Artists deconstruct their composition, revisit the impact the songs had on them personally, and dissect the socio-economic and cultural conditions that inspired the landmark work and gave voice to a generation. Very interesting, I really enjoyed it, and learned a lot!
(edited) I recently worked on the subtitles for Founders Valley, a series made by the Deutsche Welle on Asia's startup scene and founders of innovative and inspiring solutions. German entrepreneur Fridtjof Detzner meets his Asian counterparts and explores the local economy.
(edited) Lately I've been helping with the transcription and translation of the raw material for a documentary project on the construction of houses for low-income families in rural Colombia using 3D printing technology. Learned a lot!
(edited) Translating "Les Misérables", an edgy and energetic crime drama by Ladj Ly that was awarded with the Jury Prize at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. Inspired by the riots of 2005 in the Paris suburbs, the film revolves around three members of an anti-crime brigade who are overrun while trying to make an arrest. // Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFfdlLW9Rwg 1 user
I'm working on the subtitles for Heimat ist ein Raum aus Zeit (Heimat is a Space in Time), a 218' long(!) film essay by Thomas Heise presented at the last Berlinale Forum. It's an immersive documentary which dives into four generations of the filmmaker's own family archives to trace the profound cultural and political upheaval of Germany's last century.
(edited) Working on the Spanish subtitles for Unstoppable, a 2018 South Korean crime action film directed by Kim Min-ho. Crime films are not usually my thing, but I'm really enjoying working on this one... Check it out if you get a chance! Here's a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xh3gcsP-Ars
(edited) I just began translating Die Puppe ("The Doll"), a 1919 German silent romantic-fantasy-comedy directed by the great Ernst Lubitsch. It follows the misadventures of an effete young man who must get married in order to inherit a fortune. He opts to purchase a remarkably lifelike doll and marry it instead, not realizing that the doll is actually the puppet-maker's flesh-and-blood daughter, in disguise. It's going to be fun!! 2 users
(edited) Subtitling Kofi and Lartey, a short 2019 documentary dealing with the stories of two children living around one of the world’s biggest electronic waste dumps in Ghana, home to 100,000 people. // Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs6FFdo2wQQ
(edited) Time coding and editing the English subtitles for Lina de Lima, a 2019 Chilean, Argentinean and Peruvian co-production. A simple story punctuated with psychedelic musical segments that follows Lina, a woman in her 40s who leaves behind her life and family in Peru to go work as a housekeeper in Chile.
(edited) I'm currently translating Accelerate, a 2019 documentary film about climate change. It follows Bill McKidden, one of the world's most influential environmentalists and founder of 350.org, a movement that aims at accelerating climate action by governments, businesses and communities worldwide. I love it when I feel I'm contributing to something important! // Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4gXzF5GzFo 1 user
(edited) Translating "The Last Attraction", a 1929 Soviet silent film directed by the married team of Olga Preobrazhenskaya and Ivan Pravov. It follows a traveling circus during the revolutionary turbulence in Russia. Surprisingly well crafted, it's delighting me with its spicy, earthy and sexy humor.
(edited) Working on the subtitles for "The Asthenic Syndrome", a 1989 film by underground Russian filmmaker Kira Muratova that won the Silver Bear (Special Jury Prize) at the 40th Berlinale. I would have never come across this film if it weren't for this assignment... Another thing I love about this job!
(edited) QCing and adapting the Spanish subtitles for In my Room, a German dystopian film directed by Ulrich Köhler, screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Quite liking it!
