When Ieyasu first settled down in what would eventually become modern Tokyo, the area was little more than a collection of scattered farming and fishing villages. The little town of Edojuku, at the mouth of the Hirakawa River, contained only about 100 thatched huts in the shadow of a dilapidated castle, built in 1457 by the minor warlord Ota Dokan. A sophisticated poet and scholar, in 1485 he was betrayed and butchered at the behest of his own lord. Ieyasu brought with him to Edo a ready-made population of considerable size. Huge numbers of peasants, merchants and ronin (master-less samurai) poured into the new capital of the shogun to labour in the construction of the castle, mansions, warehouses and other infrastructure required to run the giant bureaucracy. The courses of rivers were changed, canals were dug and Hibiya Inlet, which brought Tokyo Bay lapping at the base of the castle hill, was filled in. When the major daimyo and their entourage were in town, the samurai portion of the city’s population probably topped 500,000, maybe even outnumbering the commoners. The samurai allotted themselves over 60 percent of the city’s land. Another 20 percent went to hundreds of shrines and temples, which formed a spiritually protective ring around the outer edges of the city. By the early 1700s, an estimated 1 to 1.4 million people lived in Edo, making it by far the largest city in the world at the time. During the same period, Kyoto had a population of 400,000 and Osaka 300,000. In 1801, when Britain’s navy dominated the seas, Europe’s largest city, London, had fewer than a million inhabitants. Japan’s population hovered around 30 million for most of the Edo era; less than 2 million belonged to the samurai families. In general, the samurai gravitated to the hilly parts of the city, or yamanote, while the townspeople congregated – or were forced to do so – in the downtown lowlands, or shitamachi, especially along the Sumida River. More than half of Edo’s residents were crammed into the 15 percent of the city comprising shitamachi, with a population density of about 70,000 people per square kilometre. Almost from the start, both yamanote and shitamachi began to encroach through land-fill onto Tokyo Bay. (Even today in the modern city of Tokyo, these two districts retain distinctive characteristics.)

Když se Iejasu původně usadil v oblasti dnešního Tokia, nacházela se zde nanejvýš hrstka roztroušených farmářských a rybářských vesnic. Městečko Edojuku v ústí řeky Hirakawa bylo tvořeno jen zhruba stovkou doškových chatrčí ve stínu zchátralého hradu. Ten v roce 1457 vybudoval druhořadý vojevůdce jménem Óta Dókan - významný básník a učenec, kterého roku 1485 zradili a zavraždili na rozkaz jeho vlastního pána. Iejasu s sebou do Eda přivedl celou novou populaci značné velikosti. Zástupy zemědělců, obchodníků a róninů (samurajů bez pána) přicházely do nového města šógunů podílet se na stavbě hradu, sídel, skladišť a veškeré další infrastruktury, která byla nezbytná pro fungování rozsáhlé byrokracie. Měnily se toky řek, vykopávaly se kanály a zátoka Hibija, díky které dosahovaly vody Tokijského zálivu až k úpatí hradního kopce, byla zasypána. Když se hlavní daimjó se svým doprovodem nacházel ve městě, podíl samurajů v populaci města pravděpodobně přesahoval 500 000 a je tudíž možné, že početně převyšovali prosté obyvatelstvo. Samurajové si mezi sebe rozdělili více než 60 procent území města. Dalších 20 procent patřilo stovkám svatyň a chrámů, které tvořily jakýsi kruh duchovní ochrany kolem vnějších hranic města. Počátkem 18. století žilo v Edu odhadem 1 až 1,4 milionů lidí, což z něj ve své době činilo největší město světa. Ve stejném období mělo Kjóto 400 000 obyvatel a Osaka 300 000. Pro srovnání: V roce 1801, kdy svět ovládalo britské námořnictvo, byl největším městem Evropy Londýn s necelým milionem obyvatel. Populace Japonska se po většinu éry Eda pohybovala kolem 30 milionů, kdy necelé 2 miliony tvořily rodiny samurajů. Samurajové obecně přebývali v hornatějších částech města neboli jamanote, zatímco prostí obyvatelé se drželi – nebo byli drženi – v nížinných částech zvaných šitamači, zejména podél řeky Sumidy. Více než polovina obyvatel Eda se tak tísnila na 15 procentech města tvořených šitamači, kde hustota populace dosahovala přibližně 70 000 lidí na čtvereční kilometr. Takřka od počátku začaly jamanote i šitamači pomocí zavážení půdy pronikat dál do Tokijského zálivu. (I dnes v moderním Tokiu si tyto dvě čtvrti dosud zachovávají odlišné rysy.)

I started translating as a student on high school. I've always had excellent marks in English and since I started translating song lyrics for fun, I realized that I really enjoy the process and want to continue, so I put up an advert at a local website to offer my services as a translator.
Since then I've cooperated many different clients of various needs and backgrounds and I have always enjoyed working for them. Linguistics has soon become my lifelong passion and I never get tired of making one language blossom into another.
