Zdrojový text - angličtina Once upon a time, a girl named September grew very tired indeed of her parents’ house, where she washed the same pink-and-yellow teacups and matching gravy boats every day, slept on the same embroidered pillow, and played with the same small and amiable dog. Because she had been born in May, and because she had a mole on her left cheek, and because her feet were very large and ungainly, the Green Wind took pity on her and flew to her window one evening just after her twelfth birthday. He was dressed in a green smoking jacket, and a green carriage-driver’s cloak, and green jodhpurs, and green snowshoes. It is very cold above the clouds in the shantytowns where the Six Winds live.
“You seem an ill-tempered and irascible enough child,” said the Green Wind. “How would you like to come away with me and ride upon the Leopard of Little Breezes and be delivered to the great sea, which borders Fairyland? I am afraid I cannot go in, as Harsh Airs are not allowed, but I should be happy to deposit you upon the Perverse and Perilous Sea.”
“Oh, yes!” breathed September, who disapproved deeply of pink-and-yellow teacups and also of small and amiable dogs.
“Well, then, come and sit by me, and do not pull too harshly on my Leopard’s fur, as she bites.”
September climbed out of her kitchen window, leaving a sink full of soapy pink-and-yellow teacups with leaves still clinging to their bottoms in portentous shapes. One of them looked a bit like her father in his long coffee-colored trench coat, gone away over the sea with a rifle and gleaming things on his hat. One of them looked a bit like her mother, bending over a stubborn airplane engine in her work overalls, her arm muscles bulging. One of them looked a bit like a squashed cabbage. The Green Wind held out his hand, snug in a green glove, and September took both his hands and a very deep breath. One of her shoes came loose as she hoisted herself over the sill, and this will be important later, so let us take a moment to bid farewell to her prim little mary jane with its brass buckle as it clatters onto the parquet floor. Good-bye, shoe! September will miss you soon.

“Now,” said the Green Wind, when September was firmly seated in the curling emerald saddle, her hands knotted in the Leopard’s spotted pelt, “there are important rules in Fairyland, rules from which I shall one day be exempt, when my papers have been processed at last and I am possessed of the golden ring of diplomatic immunity. I am afraid that if you trample upon the rules, I cannot help you. You may be ticketed or executed, depending on the mood of the Marquess.”
“Is she very terrible?”
The Green Wind frowned into his brambly beard. “All little girls are terrible,” he admitted finally, “but the Marquess, at least, has a very fine hat.”
“Tell me the rules,” said September firmly. Her mother had taught her chess when she was quite small, and she felt that if she could remember which way knights ought to go, she could certainly remember Fairy rules.
“First, no iron of any kind is allowed. Customs is quite strict on this point. Any bullets, knives, maces, or jacks you might have on your person will be confiscated and smelted. Second, the practice of alchemy is forbidden to all except young ladies born on Tuesdays—”
“I was born on a Tuesday!”
“It is certainly possible that I knew that,” the Green Wind said with a wink. “Third, aviary locomotion is permitted only by means of Leopard or licensed Ragwort Stalk. If you find yourself not in possession of one of these, kindly confine yourself to the ground. Fourth, all traffic travels widdershins. Fifth, rubbish takeaway occurs on second Fridays. Sixth, all changelings are required to wear identifying footwear. Seventh, and most important, you may in no fashion cross the borders of the Worsted Wood, or you will either perish most painfully or be forced to sit through a very tedious tea service with several spinster hamadryads. These laws are sacrosanct, except for visiting dignitaries and spriggans. Do you understand?”
September, I promise you, tried very hard to listen, but the rushing winds kept blowing her dark hair into her face. “I … I think so…,” she stammered, pulling her curls away from her mouth.
“Obviously, the eating or drinking of Fairy foodstuffs constitutes a binding contract to return at least once a year in accordance with seasonal myth cycles.”
September started. “What? What does that mean?”
The Green Wind stroked his neatly pointed beard. “It means: Eat anything you like, precious cherry child!” He laughed like the whistling air through high branches. “Sweet as cherries, bright as berries, the light of my moony sky!”
The Leopard of Little Breezes yawned up and farther off from the rooftops of Omaha, Nebraska, to which September did not even wave good-bye. One ought not to judge her: All children are heartless. They have not grown a heart yet, which is why they can climb tall trees and say shocking things and leap so very high that grown-up hearts flutter in terror. Hearts weigh quite a lot. That is why it takes so long to grow one. But, as in their reading and arithmetic and drawing, different children proceed at different speeds. (It is well known that reading quickens the growth of a heart like nothing else.) Some small ones are terrible and fey, Utterly Heartless. Some are dear and sweet and Hardly Heartless at all. September stood very generally in the middle on the day the Green Wind took her, Somewhat Heartless, and Somewhat Grown.
And so September did not wave good-bye to her house or her mother’s factory, puffing white smoke far below her. She did not even wave good-bye to her father when they passed over Europe. You and I might be shocked by this, but September had read a great number of books and knew that parents are only angry until they have discovered that their little adventurer has been to Fairyland and not the corner pub, and then everything is all right. Instead, she looked straight into the clouds until the wind made her eyes water. She leaned into the Leopard of Little Breezes, whose pelt was rough and bright, and listened to the beating of her huge and thundering heart.
Překlad - čeština Byla jednou jedna dívenka jménem September a té se omrzelo žít v otcovském domě, kde dennodenně myla pořád ty samé růžovo-žluté hrníčky na čaj a stejnobarevné omáčníky, spala pořád na tom samém vyšívaném polštáři a hrála si pořád s tím samým rozkošným malým psíkem. Protože se narodila v květnu a protože měla na levé tváři mateřské znaménko a protože měla veliká a neohrabaná chodidla, Zelenému Větru se jí zželelo a jednoho večera nedlouho po jejích dvanáctých narozeninách se přihnal k jejímu oknu. Měl na sobě zelené domácí sako a zelený plášť, jaký nosívají kočí, zelené jezdecké kalhoty a zelené sněžnice. Tam nahoře nad mraky, kde ve zchátralých městech žije Šest Větrů, je velice chladno.
„Zdá se, že jsi dost mrzuté a prchlivé dítko,“ prohlásil Zelený Vítr. „Jak by se ti líbilo jít teď se mnou a svézt se na Levhartici mírných vánků až k ohromnému moři na hranicích Čarozemě? Obávám se, že hranice s tebou překročit nemohu, neboť Prudkým vichrům je tam vstup zakázán, ovšem bude mi potěšením vysadit tě na břehu Zvráceného zlověstného moře.“
„Jistěže!“ vydechla September, která o růžovo-žlutých hrníčcích na čaj ani o rozkošných malých psících neměla valné mínění.
„Tak vyskoč a sedni si sem ke mně, jen moji Levhartici moc netahej za kožich, kouše.“
September prolezla kuchyňským oknem ven a za sebou nechala dřez plný namydlených růžovo-žlutých hrníčků, k jejichž dnům byly pořád ještě přilepené čajové lístky zlověstných tvarů. Jeden z nich vypadal trochu jako její otec, který odešel za moře v dlouhém nepromokavém kabátě kávové barvy, s ručnicí a s nějakými lesklými věcmi na klobouku. Jeden z nich vypadal trochu jako její matka, když se v pracovní kombinéze sklání nad zarputilým letadlovým motorem a napínají se jí svaly na pažích. Jeden z nich vypadal trochu jako rozmačkané zelí. Zelený Vítr jí podal ruku v zelené rukavici a September ji přijala a velmi zhluboka se nadechla. Jak šplhala přes parapet, rozepnula se jí botka, což bude později důležité; věnujme tedy nyní chvilku rozloučení s její úhlednou drobnou lakýrkou s páskem přes nárt a mosaznou přezkou, která právě s klapnutím dopadá na parkety. Sbohem, botko! Už brzy budeš September chybět.
„Nuže,“ začal Zelený Vítr, jakmile se September hezky uvelebila v prohnutém smaragdovém sedle a zabořila prsty do skvrnité levhartí kožešiny, „v Čarozemi platí důležitá pravidla, která se mě jednoho dne přestanou týkat, tedy až budou moje dokumenty konečně vyřízeny a já budu vlastnit zlatý prsten diplomatické imunity. Obávám se, že pokud se ovšem proti některému z těchto pravidel proviníš ty, nebudu schopen ti pomoci. Můžeš dostat pokutu, nebo být popravena – podle toho, jakou bude mít Markýza zrovna náladu.“
„Je hodně strašlivá?“
„Zelený Vítr se pod ježatými vousy zamračil. „Všechna děvčátka jsou strašlivá,“ připustil nakonec, „ale Markýza má aspoň skvělý klobouk.“
„Chci ta pravidla znát,“ prohlásila September odhodlaně. Když byla ještě celkem malá, naučila ji máma hrát šachy, takže teď měla pocit, že když si zvládla zapamatovat, jak se táhne s koněm, tak pravidla Čarozemě si rozhodně dokáže zapamatovat taky.
„Za prvé, není povoleno nic ze železa. Celníci jsou v tomhle ohledu velice přísní. Všechny náboje, nože, trnové kyje nebo obušky, které bys případně měla u sebe, budou zkonfiskovány a ztaveny. Za druhé, praktikování alchymie je zakázáno všem kromě mladých dam, které se narodily v úterý –“
„Já jsem se narodila v úterý!“
„Není vyloučené, že jsem to věděl,“ zamrkal na ni Zelený Vítr. „Za třetí, aeronautická lokomoce je povolena pouze na levhartím hřbetě nebo na stéble lomihnátu vlastnícím patřičné povolení. V případě, že ani jeden z těchto prostředků nebudeš mít právě k dispozici, buď prosím tak laskava a zůstaň hezky na zemi. Za čtvrté, veškerý dopravní ruch probíhá do protivky. Za páté, odpad se odváží o druhých pátcích. Za šesté, všechny podvržené děti musí povinně nosit identifikační obuv. Za sedmé, a to je nejdůležitější, nesmíš v žádném případě překročit hranice Zašmodrchaného lesa, jinak zhyneš tou nejbolestivější možnou smrtí, nebo budeš nucena prosedět neuvěřitelně nudný čajový dýchánek s několika staropanenskými hamadryádami. Tato pravidla jsou posvátná pro všechny kromě navštěvujících hodnostářů a lesních skřítků. Je ti to jasné?“
Přísahám, že se September opravdu ze všech sil snažila poslouchat, jenže prudký vichr jí neustále sfoukával její tmavé kadeře do tváře. „Asi… asi ano…“ vysoukala ze sebe, zatímco si vytahovala pramínky vlasů z pusy.
„Samozřejmě že konzumace čaropotravin dává vzniknout závazné smlouvě o návratu minimálně jednou za rok v souladu se střídáním sezónních mytických cyklů.“
September sebou trhla. „Cože? Co to znamená?“
Zelený Vítr si mnul úhledně zašpičatělý vous. „To znamená: klidně sněz, cokoli chceš, třešínko má rozmilá!“ Jeho smích zněl, jako když vysoko ve větvích stromů hvízdá vítr. „Veselá višničko, sladká borůvčičko, hvězdičko zářivá!“
Levhartice mírných vánků vystartovala vysoko a daleko nad střechy města Omaha ve státě Nebraska, kterému September ani nezamávala na rozloučenou. Nemějme jí to za zlé: děti nemají srdce. Ještě jim nenarostlo, což je taky důvod, proč mohou šplhat na vysokánské stromy, říkat strašlivé věci a skákat tak neuvěřitelně vysoko, že se dospělým srdce chvějí hrůzou. Srdce jsou poměrně těžká. To proto to trvá tak dlouho, než lidem narostou. Ale tak jako se každé dítě učí číst a kreslit a počítat vlastním tempem, i srdce roste každému jinak rychle. (Je dobře známo, že čtení urychluje růst srdce jako nic jiného.) Někteří prckové jsou potrhlí a strašní, naprosto bez srdce. Někteří jsou milí a hodní a zdaleka ne bez srdce. September byla toho dne, kdy ji Zelený Vítr odnesl, tak zhruba uprostřed, trošku bez srdce a trošku už s ním.
A tak September nezamávala na rozloučenou ani svému domovu, ani továrně, která hluboko pod ní vyfukovala bílý dým a ve které pracovala její matka. Dokonce ani nezamávala otci, když přelétali nad Evropou. Vás i mě to může šokovat, ale September už tou dobou přečetla hromady knížek a věděla, že rodiče se zlobí jen do té doby, než zjistí, že se jejich malý dobrodruh nevydal do nejbližší hospody, nýbrž do Čarozemě, a pak je zase všechno v pořádku. Místo mávání hleděla September přímo do mraků, dokud se jí oči v silném větru nezalily slzami. Přitiskla se k Levhartici mírných vánků, jejíž kožich byl hrubý a zářivý, a zaposlouchala se do hromového tlukotu jejího ohromného srdce.
