Market share gives the distributor considerable economic leverage over suppliers (production companies) and buyers (of advertising).
The three elements cited above are the most significant for media institutions. But of course there are many other factors, which affect different industries in different ways, and for different reasons. For example, the development of new media (especially the Net) which expand the numbers of outlets for advertising and which offer more choices for leisure time activity, has helped reduce TV advertising revenue (and therefore its capacity to spend) over the past few years. Grossberg et al. (1998) report that US Network audience share fell from 91 per cent in 1978-79 to 40 per cent in 1996-97, because of competition from cable and satellite channels. There has been a similar though less marked pattern in Britain. Still, it has been enough to hit ITV viewing figures and to contribute to the reduction in advertising revenue. However, it may be pointed out that the British commercial television system has its own peculiar elements, which affect income, costs and profits. In particular there is the amount that has to be bid in order to get a contract to broadcast in the first place. Then there are taxation costs. In the case of ITV these two cost elements mean that the company pays back to government about 30 per cent of its advertising income. Also, ITV has a public service licence, which means that it is obligated to provide news, regional and minority interest television - which are relatively unattractive to paying advertisers. Regulation comes in various guises, and the free market is not, in these respects, as free as it may seem.

Grossberg a spol. (1998) informuje o poklesu uživatelů americké televizní společnosti z 91 % v letech 1978-79 na 40 % v letech 1996-97 kvůli konkurenci kabelových a satelitních kanálů. Podobně, i když v menším měřítku, tomu bylo i v Británii. I to ale stačilo ke zvýšení sledovanosti komerční televizní společnosti a ke snížení výnosu z reklam. Avšak lze zdůraznit, že britský systém komerční televize má svoje vlastní, zvláštní prvky, které ovlivňují příjem, náklady a výnosy. Zejména je zde částka, která musí být nejdříve nabídnuta, aby bylo možné získat smlouvu o vysílání. Dále jsou zde náklady na zdanění. V případě komerční televize tyto dva nákladové prvky znamenají, že společnost platí vládě zhruba 30 % jejího zisku z reklamy. Komerční společnost má také licenci na poskytování veřejné služby, což znamená, že je povinna poskytovat zprávy, regionální a menší zájmové televize, které jsou poměrně nezajímavé pro platící inzerenty. Omezení na sebe berou různé podoby a volný trh není v tomto ohledu tak volný, jak by se mohlo zdát.
