I have OOo 3.0.1 on Linux Ubuntu (the Ubuntu was installed relatively recently; before that, I had Debian). The OOo display is so disrupted (in Writer and Calc) that I can't use this anymore for anything important. Sentences appear on top of one another, or vanish temporarily; in Calc, cells appear on top of one another. It seems that everything is actually "there": if I keep going and enter the document, then go back into it, it seems to be okay (for the moment, at least). I reinstalled OOo and... I reinstalled OOo and did a rain dance and googled and all the usual things one does, but it's still the same. I suspect the problem is not with OOo, but either with Ubuntu, my monitor settings, or something else I am unaware of.
Has anybody had such a problem?

Are you using the Ubuntu version of OpenOffice or one downloaded directly from www.oooforum.org or have you tried both? Have you tried deleting the hidden directory /home/<username>/.openoffice.org (save a back-up if necessary, of course) and re-installing?

Well, the answer to all your questions is "yes, sort of." I am not a Linux geek--my son installed it for me and then went off to college, and I'm trying to learn. I reinstalled from the Ubuntu distro the other day, with no change. I think before that it was installed from the website, but I'm not sure, will have to ask him.

I'm pretty sure it's not an OOo problem, since reinstalling did not help.

I have done the first thing on your list, disabling visual effects, and as far as I can tell so far, it's working. But of course, the problems never occur when you're trying to test a solution!

(Of course, he wasn't answering my pleas for help until I forwarded your suggestions to him! He's 20 years old and is mainly too busy, at the beginning of his second year in college, to deal with his mother's computer ignorance.)
