This two-day course aims to provide an introduction to Academic Discourse in English (EAD). It will include a theoretical component, in which the main characteristics of EAD will be described and contrasted with Portuguese, and practical sessions, involving the analysis of written and orally-delivered academic texts, exercises practising certain common structures, and the preparation of abstracts. In the final session, there will be a simulated conference, in which students will be invited to present mini-papers in parallel sessions. Students need to have a fairly advanced level of general English, both oral and written. All disciplinary backgrounds are welcome. Karen Bennett Karen Bennett has a PhD in Translation Studies and is a member of the Centre for Comparative Studies at the University of Lisbon. She is currently teaching English for Academic Purposes at the Faculty of Letters, University of Coimbra, and also works as a translator, specialising in academic texts. Her first book, Academic Discourse, Hegemony and Translation, is soon to be published by St Jerome Press, Manchester.
