Good poll for a Saturday ... Sep 11, 2010

... given that those who might answer no might also not check the Proz poll over the weekend!

Good point Mary Sep 11, 2010

It will be interesting to watch if the balance of replies changes noticeably on Monday when those who don't work Saturday and Sunday return to their desks.

Yes Sep 11, 2010

Old habits are difficult to break, and one of them is checking email - rain or shine, it will be done at least once a day on weekends.

Yes, those who have answered today's poll are semi-working - educating oneself and/or helping colleagues is a form of work.

Have a wonderful weekend.

What's the weekend in a global profession and global world? Sep 11, 2010

Of course, everyone is free to define his own weekend, but I'm sure I'm not the only one in the Proz community who has clients in different parts of the world where weekends can vary. In my case for example, my clients in the Middle East have a weekend on Thursday-Friday, those in Europe on Saturday-Sunday. Locally, here in Bethlehem, there is no real weekend, companies take either Friday or Sunday off, rarely 2 days a week.
Then if we get into the time differences between Australia and

Then if we get into the time differences between Australia and the US, for example, things can get really complicated.
BTW, I check my emails all week long and yes, I have been known to work on weekends

I agree with Melanie Sep 12, 2010

Time differences make it imperative for me to check my mail during weekends, and particularly on Sundays

Happy translating!

Yes Sep 25, 2010

Provided I'm working during the weekend, which is mostly the case.
But I never check them when I do not work, which includes holidays.

Monday - back to work (c: Sep 27, 2010

Yes I check them, but less frequently and then I usually don't reply before Monday.
I think it's very important indeed to have weekends. It seems to be increasingly normal for people to say "What weekend" and also for clients to assume that we don't have them. This is a state of affairs that seriously worries me. Of course I occasionally work on weekends too, but I try to avoid it because weekends are important to recover from work and do other things (and I don't mean just the dishes and

This is a state of affairs that seriously worries me. Of course I occasionally work on weekends too, but I try to avoid it because weekends are important to recover from work and do other things (and I don't mean just the dishes and washing either). People fought hard for them not very long ago, so please don't just throw them away lightly!
