Although the content is sometimes a bit dry, there is always an interesting side to it.

I usually manage to find something interesting in most of my jobs, even if only marginally. For example, this month I'm translating software strings for one client, and there is one sentence which keeps cropping up repeatedly. I've told the client about it, but it doesn't seem to make any difference, they keep sending me this one darn sentence to translate, again and again and again. I am, of course, billing for it each time... Heigh-ho, I suppose it's their money…

A lot of my projects are truly interesting. In the beginning of this year I’ve translated two big and very interesting projects: the first one on radicalization and violent extremism, the other on xenophobia. Both were very challenging and I learned a lot! But even in small projects, I usually can find something interesting, I do have a very curious mind…

Well, sometimes I get boring texts or texts that are not that interesting... but I specialised in fields I like and enjoy translating, otherwise I don't think I could be able to do this job in the long term!

I really enjoy most of the documents that come my way, and that may be because I'm getting increasingly selective. I don't want to spend my golden years stressing out over stuff that doesn't interest me. There's too little time left. Today I did a bunch of bank account statements. My client needed someone who was cleared in their system to work with confidential material, so I couldn't just pass it on to another colleague. My client needed someone who was cleared in their system to work with confidential material, so I couldn't just pass it on to another colleague. I refused twice, and each time they sweetened the pot (converted the PDFs to Word files, added more money, and extended the deadline), so I finally felt I couldn't say no and still stay in their good graces. It turned out to be more boring and stressful than I had even expected. But the amounts of money being transferred back and forth were so large that I let my imagination run wild -- that made it a bit more fun. Still, the experience reminded me that that's not the kind of work I want to do anymore. ▲ Collapse

That said, I do take some really tedious jobs from time to time if the money's good enough. Thinking mainly of law. O. M. Zzzzzzzz....

All the time or Almost all the time I've been translating technical stuff for around 32 years so because I find it fascinating. I always was interested in sciences in secondary school and got good grades in the sciences even though I did Latin for seven years and classical Greek for four. Besides, I'm confronted by screwing, male and female mating parts, lubrication, grease nipples, and other PG-rated stuff on a daily basis. I don't think I'd want to translate anything ... I always find a way to enjoy with the content especially if its the subtitle of a movie, documentary or episode.

...the last 25% I do only to make ends meet. But I've always been attracted to learning new things, in any area...except economics and finance (which I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole)
