Tips for buses and trains to Oxford Jul 30, 2004

For times on trains in the UK, look at www.nationalrail.co.uk (then click "Plan my journey"), though this will only give you a rough idea for the time being, as there is a timetable change in September, I think. I believe the train station lies a little way away from the city centre, but there are frequent buses to connect with trains.

If you need to book rail tickets, go to www.thetrainline.co.uk, but again leave it till at least late September. *Please note that this is not possible from abroad - see instead my other note below on rail travel from abroad.*

For timetables booking long-distance buses, or "coaches" as we call them in the UK, go to www.nationalexpress.com. If you click on the Airport button (http://www.nationalexpress.com/nxairport/airports.cfm), this shows you the main services from airports.

For those bad people who insist on driving, there is an excellent "Park & Ride" scheme, with secure places you can leave your car on the main road and motorway network around Oxford. See http://www.parkandride.net/oxford/html/oxford_frameset.html

Here is an excellent page generally on getting to Oxford:
http://www.oxford.gov.uk/oxford/tourism.nsf/leadpages/GettingtoOxford?OpenDocument&Start=1&Count=99&Expand=4

And this has general information for visitors to Oxford:
http://www.oxford.gov.uk/oxford/tourism.nsf/pages/tourism.html

Hope this helps!

How far? Jul 30, 2004

I am considering a trip to Europe that would route through London - Stansted, so I might be able to attend on the way back. How far would it be from there to Oxford and would transportation be readily available?

Thetrainline.com booking Jul 30, 2004

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for all the info.

If you need to book rail tickets, go to www.thetrainline.co.uk, but again leave it till at least late September.

Unfortunately, you can't use this service, if you are not an UK resident or you can't reach one of those "FastTicket" machines (I tried myself a couple of weeks ago, there is none in Stansted for example).

Giuliana

Hi Daina

Someone posted on the other forum this information about Stansted to Oxford:

And there\'s a direct bus from Stansted to Oxford:

National Express 757
Linking Stansted Airport, Hemel Hempstead, High Wycombe and Oxford every two hours.
Further information: 0870 5747 777 (UK only)

Hope this helps!

Gosh, Giuliana, you're right!

It could instead be possible to travel by train all the way from the Continent. I believe that tickets can be booked via Deutsche Bahn for travel from "Europe" to the UK

Coming by car; parking Aug 2, 2004

I think parking in St. Margaret's Road is residents only now (with permit). We used to park a couple of roads up in Staverton or Rawlinson Road. The park and ride service is great; buses up the Banbury and Woodstock roads are great as well and stop right outside the college.

Information about getting to and parking in Oxford Aug 2, 2004

Hi everyone,

if flying to Stansted or Luton you should consider that the bus connection is not good, there's only one bus every two hours from Stansted and it takes three hours to get to Oxford, Luton is even worse, whereas Heathrow and Gatwick have much better connections (see: http://www.oxfordbus.co.uk/heathrow.html). I would not recommend trying to park in Oxford, it's a hassle and expensive. Try the park and ride or park in Marston (part of Oxford) and walk through the meadows. (search under www.multimap.com for Marston Road, you have to walk down Ferry Road, not to be confused with Marston Ferry Road, and then take the little path through the meadows which doesn't show on the map, you get out at South Parks Road).

@ awilliams, Kristina Aug 2, 2004

many thanks for your useful tips.
I once had to get the 'bus from Heathrow to Birmingham and I was "ripe for the island", as the Germans say, when I got to New Street Station!
I'm still (!) keen on the idea of clubbing together to hire an "espace" and taking a punt on parking in Oxford and/or parking and riding. I've just booked my Ryanair flight from Lübeck to Stansted (54 euros return with all charges) and will be arriving 09:45 local time - anyone else arriving about then or with

Coaches from Heathrow Aug 5, 2004

Hi Brigith,

There's a half-hourly (every 20 mins at peak hours) coach service from Heathrow run by Oxford Express from the bus station at Heathrow Airport. You will find more information about this at www.nationalexpress.com.

HTH

Best regards,
Jacqueline

Thanks a lot.

High Street Aug 20, 2004

Salut Victor!

your best bet is to get out in the High, walk up to Carfax and turn right into Cornmarket Street, which leads into St. Giles, which in turn forks into the Banbury and Woodstock Roads. You can take either of those, since Stews lies between the two. You'll be able to catch a bus somewhere in St. Giles.

HTH,
Rod

it depends a bit where they drop you in the High, e.g. outside Magdalen!?!

if you're planning to bus it, it might be wise to get out at the bus station and change to a bus going up the Banbury or Woodstock Roads - they'll have destinations like Summertown or Wolvercote.
