OS: Windows XP home edition
Outlook 2000

After reading the terrible posting about a colleague's office being robbed, I am trying to improve my backup system.

I'd like to synchronize Outlook between my laptop and desktop.

I've looked at Easy2Sync and similar software. Seems pretty straightforward if your machines are networked.

My questions are:

Has anyone used any of these software packages? Any recommendations?

No problem with Easy2Sync Oct 20, 2005

Hi,
I am frequently using the Easy2Sync software - small, nice and quite simple. I have my PC upstairs in a provisional office, but sometimes I prefer to work on my laptop in the verrandah or in the garden. I have wi-fi network with basis at the PC and my laptop gets automatically connected to it whenever started (however I must be not more than 100 m from the source). Hi,
I am frequently using the Easy2Sync software - small, nice and quite simple. I have my PC upstairs in a provisional office, but sometimes I prefer to work on my laptop in the verrandah or in the garden. I have wi-fi network with basis at the PC and my laptop gets automatically connected to it whenever started (however I must be not more than 100 m from the source). Easy2Sync is used to synchronize Outlooks between my PC and my Laptop. It however synchronizes ONLY the mailbox! When you want to synchronize you must must start both computers and have the Outlooks on on both of them. Then you start the synchronization from the source (in my case from the PC). When finished I can start working with the emails on my laptop and I keep receiving emails on the laptop. When finished working outside (and presumably having received some emails which I wish to synchronize again with the main PC), I must start the synchronization on the PC again. After few days of practice I got used to it)).
Another software is QSynchronization which should synchronize all folders of the Outlook but I tried it only once and then the evaluation phase was over (and the product itself was too expensive for me and my requirements), so no advice at that point.
Anyway, if you do not need 100% synchornization of every folder every single day, try the Easy2Sync.

I don't know about the synchronising, but I would recommend getting rid of the virus-trapping Outlook. Move on to Mozilla Thunderbird.

I use G-mail personally. I set it up to archive e-mails when they are downloaded by an e-mail manager, that way I have them at home on Thunderbird and anywhere in the world by selecting "All mail" in G-mail.

Right now getting rid of Outlook is not an option Oct 20, 2005

I knew somebody was going to say that...

Believe me, I am no fan of Microsoft, but old habits die hard.

I use Outlook to manage my entire workflow. I am also straight out with work these days and don't have time to experiment with using a new system.

Thanks!

Sara

One to try... Mar 10, 2010

Wanted to pass along Syncing.net as a syncing tool for those who come across this thread. It synchronizes Outlook and allows for file sharing for both professional and personal use. Here is additional information / a free trial download link: http://www.syncing.net/en/products.html

Hope this is helpful!

dropbox Mar 11, 2010

Whoops! Just noticed the question was from 2005. Nevertheless, the suggestion remains the easiest way I've found to keep email synchronized on two or more machines easily.

Hi Sara,

DropBox is your solution. https://www.dropbox.com/

Put your Outlook profile folder into your dropbox (and do the same with your laptop). Whenever you use outlook, the Dropbox folder online is synched, so when you use your second computer, it updates the Outlook profile folder automatically.

Chances are your Outlook folder will exceed the 2 Go offered free, but upgrades won't break the bank.

Have fun!

Patricia
