Brontekst - Duits - Pinneberg erfährt etwas Neues über Lämmchen und fasst einen großen Entschluss -
Es ist fünf Minuten nach vier. Pinneberg hat das eben festgestellt. Er steht, ein nett aussehender, blonder junger Mann, vor dem Haus Rothenbaumstraße 24 und wartet.
Also es ist fünf Minuten nach vier, und auf drei viertel vier ist Pinneberg mit Lämmchen verabredet. Pinneberg hat die Uhr wieder eingesteckt und sieht erst auf ein Schild, das am Eingang des Hauses Rothenbaumstraße 24 angemacht ist. Er liest:

Eben! Und nun ist es doch wieder fünf Minuten nach vier. Wenn ich mir eine Zigarette anbrenne, kommt Lämmchen natürlich sofort um die Ecke. Lass ich es also. Heute wird es schon wieder teuer genug.
Er sieht von dem Schild fort. Die Rothenbaumstraße hat nur eine Häuserreihe, jenseits des Fahrdamms, jenseits eines Grünstreifens, jenseits des Kais fließt die Strela, hier schon hübsch breit, kurz vor ihrer Einmündung in die Ostsee. Ein frischer Wind weht herüber, die Büsche nicken mit ihren Zwiegen, die Bäume rauschen ein wenig.
So müsste man wohnen können, denkt Pinneberg. Sicher hat dieser Sesam sieben Zimmer. Muss ein klotziges Geld verdienen. Er wird Miete zahlen... zweihundert Mark? Dreihundert Mark? Ach was, ich habe keine Ahnung. - Zehn Minuten nach vier!
Pinneberg greift in seine Tasche, holt aus dem Etui eine Zigarette und brennt sie an.
Um die Ecke weht Lämmchen, im plissierten weißen Rock, der Rohseidenbluse, ohne Hut, die blonden Haare verweht.
'Tag, Junge. Es ging wirklich nicht eher. Die Burmeister war heute besonders ulkig. Böse?'
'Keine Spur. Nur, wir werden endlos sitzen müssen. Es sind mindestens dreißig Leute reingegangen, seit ich warte.'
'Sie werden ja nicht alle zum Doktor gegangen sein. Und dann sind wir ja angemeldet.'
'Siehst du, dass es ichtig war, dass wir uns angemeldet haben?!'
'Natürlich war es richting. Du hast ja immer recht, Junge.'
Und vor der Entretür nimmt sie seinen Kopf zwischen beide Hände und küsst ihn stürmisch. 'O Gott, bin ich glücklich, dass ich dich mal wieder habe, Junge. Denke doch, beinahe vierzehn Tage!'
'Ja, Lämmchen', antwortet er. 'Ich bin auch nicht mehr brummig.'
Die Tür geht auf, und im halbdunklen Flur steht ein wießer Schemen vor ihnen, bellt: 'Die Krankenscheine!'
'Lassen Sie einen doch erst mal rein', sagt Pinneberg und schiebt Lämmchen vor sich her. 'Übrigens sind wir privat. Ich bin angemeldet. Pinneberg ist mein Name.'
Auf das Wort >privat< hin hebt der Schemen die Hand und schaltet das Licht auf dem Flur an: "Herr Doktor kommt sofort. Einen Augenblick, bitte. Bitte dort hinein.'
Sie gehen auf die Tür zu und kommen an einer anderen, halb offenstehenden vorbei. Das ist wohl das gewöhnliche Wartezimmer, und in ihm scheinen die dreißig zu sitzen, die Pinneberg an sich vorbeikommen sah. Alles schaut auf die beiden, und ein Stimmengewirr erhebt sich: 'So was gibt's nicht!' - 'Wir warten schon länger!' - 'Wozu zahlen wir unsere Kassenbeiträge?' - 'Und mehr als solche feinen Pinkels!'
Die Schwester tritt in die Tür: 'Seien Sie bloß mal ruhig! Herr Doktor wird ja geschört. Was Sie denken, ist nicht, das ist der Schwiegersohn von Herrn Doktor mit seiner Frau. Nicht wahr?'
Pinneberg lächelt geschmeichelt, Lämmchen strebt der anderen Tür zu. Einen Augenblick ist Stille.
'Nu bloß schnell', flüstert die Schwester und schiebt Pinneberg vor sich her. 'Diese Kassenpatienten sind zu gewöhnlich. Was die Leute sich einbilden für das bisschen Geld, dass die Kasse zahlt...'
Die Tür fällt zu, der Junge und Lämmchen sind im roten Plüsch.
'Das ist sicher sein Privatsalon', sagt Pinneberg. 'Wie gefällt dir das? Schrecklich altmodisch, finde ich.'
'Mir war es grässlich', sagt Lämmchen. 'Wir sind doch sonst auch Kassenpatienten. Da hört man mal, wie die beim Arzt über uns reden.'
'Warum regst du dich auf?', fragt er. 'Das ist doch so. Mit uns kleinen Leuten machen sie, was sie wollen...'
'Es regt mich aber auf...'
Die Tür öffnet sich, eine andere Schwester kommt. 'Herr und Frau Pinneberg bitte? Herr Doktor lässt noch um einen Augenblick bitten. Wenn ich unterdes die Personalien aufnehmen dürfte?'
'Bitte', sagt Pinneberg und wird gleich gefragt: 'Wie alt?'
'Dreiundzwanzig.'
Und nun geht es weiter: 'Vorname: Johannes.' - Nach einem Stocken: 'Buchhalter.'
Und glatter: 'Immer gesund gewesen. Die üblichen Kinderkrankheiten, soviel ich weiß, beide gesund.' Wieder stockend: 'Ja, die Mutter lebt noch. Der Vater nicht mehr, nein. Kann ich nicht sagen, woran er gestorben ist.'
Und Lämmchen:
'Zweiundzwanzig - Emma.'
Jetzt zögert sie: 'Geborene Möschel. - Stets gesund, beide Eltern am Leben, beide gesund.'
'Also einen Augenblick noch. Herr Doktor ist sofort frei.'
'Wozu das alles nötig ist', brummt er, nachdem die Tür wieder zuviel. 'Wo wir doch nur...'
'Gerne hast du es nicht gesagt: Buchhalter.'

Vertaling - Nederlands - Pinneberg komt iets nieuws te weten over Lammetje
en hij neemt een belangrijk besluit -

Hij wendt zijn blik van het uithangbord af. De Roodeboomstraat telt slechts één huizenrij; achter de rijbaan, achter een groenstrook, achter de kade stroomt de Strela hier al aardig breed net voor haar monding in de Oostzee. Een frisse wind steekt op, de twijgen van de struiken knikken, de bomen ruisen wat.
Zo moest je kunnen wonen, denkt Pinneberg. Die Sesam heeft vast zeven kamers. Zal een hoop geld verdienen. Hij zal huur betalen... tweehonderd Mark? Driehonderd Mark? Ach, weet ik veel. - Tien minuten na vieren!
Pinneberg graait in zijn zak, haalt een sigaret uit een etui en steekt hem aan.
Om de hoek komt Lammetje aangezwaaid in een geplisseerde witte rok, ruwe zijde bloes, zonder hoed, de blonde haren verwaaid.
'Dag m’n jonge. Ja, het kon echt niet eerder. Burmeester was vandaag bijzonder grappig. Boos?'
'Nee, hoor. Alleen, we zullen eindeloos moeten wachten. Er zijn ten minste dertig mensen naar binnen gegaan terwijl ik heb staan wachten.'
'Ze zullen vast niet allemaal naar de arts moeten. En wij hebben een afspraak.'
'Zie je nou, dat het goed was om een afspraak te maken?'
'Natuurlijk was dat goed. Joh, je hebt toch altijd gelijk.'
En voor de deur naar de ingang neemt ze zijn hoofd in beide handen en kust hem stormachtig. 'Oh god, wat ben ik blij dat ik jou toch heb jonge. Denk je eens in, bijna viertien dagen!'
'Ja, Lammetje,' antwoordt hij. 'Ik ben ook niet meer knorrig.'
De deur gaat open en in de halfduistere gang staat een witte schim voor hen. Ze blaft: 'Ziekenfondsbriefjes!'
'Laat u iemand toch eerst eens binnen', zegt Pinneberg en hij schuift Lammetje voor zich uit. 'Overigens, wij zijn privé. Ik ben aangemeld. Pinneberg is mijn naam.'
Op het woord "privé" heft de schim haar hand en schakelt het licht aan in de gang: 'De dokter komt direct. Een moment, alstublieft. Daar naar binnen alstublieft.'
Ze gaan af op de deur en komen langs een andere half openstaande deur. Dat zal wel de gewone wachtkamer zijn, en hierin schijnen de dertig te zitten die Pinneberg aan hem voorbij zag komen. Iedereen kijkt naar hen beiden op, en een wirwar aan stemmen verheft zich: 'Dat kan toch niet!' - 'Wij wachten al langer!' - 'Waarvoor betalen wij onze ziekenfondsbijdragen?' - 'En meer dan dit soort verfijnde heerschappen!'
De zuster komt aan de deur: 'Weest u nou eens rustig! De dokter wordt toch gestoord. Dit is niet wat u denkt, dit is de zwager van de dokter met zijn vrouw? Niet waar?'
Pinneberg glimlach gevleid. Lammetje reikt naar de andere deur. Een ogenblik is het stil.
'Snel nu', fluistert de zuster en schuift Pinneberg voor zich uit. 'Deze ziekenfondspatiënten zijn te gewoon. Wat deze mensen in hun hoofd halen voor dat beetje geld dat het ziekenfonds betaalt...'
De deur valt in het slot, de jonge en Lammetje zitten op het rode pluche.
'Dit is zeker zijn privé-salon', zegt Pinneberg. 'Hoe bevalt je dit? Vreselijk ouderwets, vind ik.'
'Ik vind het afgrijselijk', zegt Lammetje. 'Wij zijn anders toch ook ziekenfondspatiënten. Nu hoor je eens hoe ze bij de dokter over ons praten.'
'Waarom wind je je op?' vraagt hij. 'Dit is toch zo. Met ons gewone stervelingen doen ze wat ze willen...'
'Toch windt het me op...'
De deur gaat open, een andere zuster meldt zich. 'De heer en mevrouw Pinneberg, alstublieft? De dokter vraagt om nog een ogenblik geduld. Zou ik intussen de personalia mogen noteren?'
'Alstublieft', zegt Pinneberg en hij krijgt meteen vragen: 'Hoe oud?'
'Drieëntwintig.'
En dan gaat het verder: 'Voornaam: Johannes" - Na een stilvallen: 'Boekhouder.'
En dan vloeiender: 'Altijd gezond geweest. De gebruikelijke kinderziektes, voor zover ik weet, beiden gezond.' Opnieuw stilvallend:
'Ja, de moeder leeft nog. De vader niet meer, nee. Kan ik niet zeggen, waaraan hij overleden is.'
En Lammetje:
'Tweeëntwintig - Emma.'
Nu aarzelt ze: 'Geboren Breukman. - 'Altijd gezond, beide ouders in leven, beide gezond.'
'Een ogenblik dus nog. De dokter is dadelijk beschikbaar.'
'Waar dit allemaal voor nodig is,' bromt hij nadat de deur weer dicht is gevallen. 'Terwijl wij toch alleen...'
'Je hebt het niet graag gezegd: boekhouder.'

Je weet niet wat je in je handen hebt.
In dit schrift dat jij nu vasthoudt heb ik de oorlog beschreven tussen mij en mijn broer.
Op deze bladzijden ben ik een maand geleden begonnen om alles te vertellen over mijn insecten. En over mijn broer en onze geheimen.
Ik wist toen nog niet hoe het uit de hand zou lopen.
Sommige geheimen kunnen maar het best bewaard blijven, iep onder de grond. Sommige geheimen kriopen uit zichzelf heel langzaam naar buiten. Sommige geheimen stinken en vreten overal gaten in.
Laat dit schrift nooit in verkeerde handen vallen!
Ik weet niet of jijzelf goede of verkeerde handen hebt. Ik hoop goede. Ik ken je niet, en toch ga ik jou alles vertellen. Iemand moet het weten.
Maar besef waar ik je mee opzadel. Als je dit hebt gelezen, is er geen weg meer terug. Weet dat ik je ga meesleuren in onze oorlog. Als je daar geen zin in hebt, of als je het niet durft aan te horen, moet je nu stoppen met lezen en moet je dit schrift opbergen. Heel goed opbergen. Ergens waar het alleen gevonden kan worden door iemand die geheimen kan bewaren. Iemand met goede handen.
Maar ik denk niet dat je dat wil doen want je bent nog steeds aan het lezen.
Zie je wel: jij hebt goede handen.
Dit briefje plak ik voorin, zodat je weet waar je aan begint. Een maand geleden was dit schrift nog leeg. Ik heb het uit de kast gepakt, ben ik de kelder gaan zitten en heb de eerste bladzijdes geschreven. Het was de dag dat mijn broer de oorlog verklaarde.

Manche Geheimnisse können am besten versteckt bleiben, tief unter der Erde. Manche Geheimnisse kriechen von allein ganz langsam an die Oberfläche. Manche Geheimnisse stinken und fressen überall Löcher rein.
Lass dieses Heft nie in falsche Hände geraten!
Ich weiß nicht, ob du selber gute oder falsche Hände hast. Ich hoffe gute. Ich kenne dich nicht, und trotzdem werd ich dir alles erzählen. Jemand muss es wissen.
Aber verstehe womit ich dich aufhalse. Wenn du das hier gelesen hast, gibt es kein Zurück mehr. Verstehe, dass ich dich in unseren Krieg mit reinziehe. Wenn du da kein Bock drauf hast, oder wenn du dich nicht traust es anzuhören, dann musst du jetzt mit dem Lesen aufhören und dieses Heft wegstecken, ganz weit wegstecken. Irgendwo, wo es nur von jemandem gefunden werden kann, der Geheimnisse bewahren kann. Jemand mit guten Händen.
Aber ich denke nicht, dass du das tun werdest, denn du liest immer noch.

Diesen Steckbrief klebe ich vorne rein, damit du weißt was du da anfängst. Vor einem Monat war dieses Heft noch leer. Ich habe es vom Bücherregal genommen, habe mich in meinem Keller hingesetzt und habe die ersten zwei Seiten geschrieben. Das war an dem Tag wo mein Bruder mir den Krieg erklärte.

Brontekst - Nederlands 3 Neuroot types
Ieder mens op deze aarde is zich er van bewust dat hij of zij ooit zal sterven, ook de held zal op een gegeven moment fysiek sterven. Tegenover het bewustzijn van onszelf, onze controle over The One Self, staat de angst voor de dood, de onmacht over het verdwijnen van The One Self. Het is het gevecht van de irrationele wereld, de wereld van willekeur en de plaatsbepaling van deze aardbol in de onmetelijke kosmos, tegenover die van de rationele mens die controle wil uitoefenen over zijn situatie. Een antwoord op deze tegenstelling is niet eenvoudig te duiden, volgens de meeste religies zijn hier alomtegenwoordige en alomwetende eigenschappen voor nodig. Los van de vraag of wij daar ooit een antwoord op kunnen verkrijgen is deze kwestie er een die altijd centraal heeft gestaan sinds het bestaan van de mensheid. Deze strijd tussen de onstuimige natuur en de, voor de mens maar moeilijk te accepteren, positie die de mens als bewust wezen daar in inneemt, is er een die continu aanwezig is. Fromm beschrijft het als volgt:
"All passions and strivings of man are attempts to find an answer to his existence or, as we may also say, they are an attempt to avoid insanity. (It may be said in passing that the real problem of mental life is not why some people become insane, but rather why most avoid insanity.) Both the mentally healthy and the neurotic are driven by the need to find an answer, the only difference being that one answer corresponds more to the total needs of man, and hence is more conducive to the unfolding of his powers and to his happiness than the other."9
Het vinden van een antwoord op deze tegenstelling ligt ook in de kern van The One Self, die bestaat uit self-preservation, besloten. En dus zijn de twee antagonisten macht en angst hier ook bij betrokken zoals Zilboorg verwoord:
"Such constant expenditure of psychological energy on the business of preserving life would be impossible if the fear of death were not as constant. The very term “self-preservation” implies an effort against some force of disintegration; the affective aspect of this is fear, fear of death."10
Deze angst voor de dood is, net als de noodzaak waarmee wij The One Self verdedigen, continu aanwezig. We kunnen daar in ons dagelijks handelen echter niet de hele tijd bij stilstaan, wij zouden niet meer tot enige daden komen en waarschijnlijk compleet gek worden van de permanente dreiging. De enige manier om hier wel mee om te gaan is om deze doodsangst te onderdrukken. Zoals Zilboorg vervolgt:
"If this fear were as constantly conscious, we should be unable to function normally. It must be properly repressed to keep us living with any modicum of comfort. We know very well that to repress means more than to put away and to forget that which was put away and the place where we put it. It means also to maintain a constant psychological effort to keep the lid on and inwardly never relax our watchfulness."11
Personen die de werkelijke omstandigheid waar zij in verkeren blijven ontkennen om vervolgens deze werkelijke situatie te gaan onderdrukken en er een substituut voor in de plaats te zetten, kunnen worden aangeduid als personen met een neurose. Het gaat hier dan niet om de enkeling die wordt weggestopt in een gesloten inrichting, nee, het gaat om ons allemaal. Wij bezitten in meer of mindere mate allemaal de drang om de werkelijke situatie waarin wij verkeren te onderdrukken en onze eigen situatie in deze wereld anders voor te stellen. Dat de 'gewone' mens dezelfde trekken heeft als het gemeenschappelijk beeld wat bestaat van een neuroot in een psychiatrische inrichting wordt verduidelijkt door Fromm:
"The phenomena which we observe in the neurotic person are in principle not different from those we find in the normal. They are only more accentuated, clear-cut, and frequently more accessible to the awareness of the neurotic person than they are in the normal who is not aware of any problem which warrants study."12
De versluierde onderdrukking die hoort bij een neurose wordt zichtbaar zodra dit mechanisme tijdelijk een hapering vertoont. Het is de reactie van een ieder op het heldere moment dat wij ervaren tijdens die romantische strandwandeling met onze partner aan het begin van hoofdstuk één. Wanneer voor ons duidelijk wordt dat wij een speelbal zijn van moeder natuur en dat wij dat onbewust weten. Zoals Marcuse stelt: "The brute fact of death denies once and for all the reality of a non-repressive existence."13
Eerder hebben we in deel een al een indeling gemaakt van de verschillende type gedragingen waarmee The One Self zich kan presenteren. Er werd onderscheid gemaakt in drie verschillende types: het negatieve type, die de neiging heeft tot negatieve gedachten of gevoelens en een mate van weerzin heeft ten opzichte van de wereld; het positieve type, die actie onderneemt en zich snel thuis voelt in iedere sociale context; het open type, die de situatie bekijkt vanaf een afstand en een dieper bewustzijn of inzicht ervaart van de wereld om hem heen.
Als we de mens nu als neuroot beschouwen dan kunnen we ook op een andere manier naar deze driedeling kijken. Deze indeling loopt parallel aan die van deel één, maar er zullen andere accenten worden geplaatst.

We are all aware of our mortality - even the hero will (physically) die at some point in time. Our fear of death, our incapacity to cope with the disappearance of The One Self, is at odds with our consciousness, our control of Th One Self. It's a battle of the irrational world, the world of arbitrariness, against that of the rational individual who wants to have control over his situation. There's no easy answer to give for this contradiction; according to most religions it requires omnipresence and omniscient qualities. Beside the question whether we will be able to get any answers, this contradiction has been a central matter since our earliest understanding of our world. There's a continuous struggle between the turbulence of nature and the position of man in this nature, which man as a conscious being finds hard to accept. Fromm describes this as follows:
"All passions and strivings of man are attempts to find an answer to his existence or, as we may also say, they are an attempt to avoid insanity. (It may be said in passing that the real problem of mental life is not why some people become insane, but rather why most avoid insanity.) Both the mentally healthy and the neurotic are driven by the need to find an answer, the only difference being that one answer corresponds more to the total needs of man, and hence is more conducive to the unfolding of his powers and to his happiness than the other."9
Finding an answer to this contradiction is also key to The One Self, which in itself consists of two antagonists, power and fear, to which Zilboorg states:
"Such constant expenditure of psychological energy on the business of preserving life would be impossible if the fear of death were not as constant. The very term “self-preservation” implies an effort against some force of disintegration; the affective aspect of this is fear, fear of death."10
This fear of death is just as constant as the need we feel to defend The One Self. But we can't constantly think about it in our daily lives, as we wouldn't be capable of getting anything done, and the constant threat would drive us completely mad. The only way to cope with it, is to suppress this threat, as Zilboorg continues:
"If this fear were as constantly conscious, we should be unable to function normally. It must be properly repressed to keep us living with any modicum of comfort. We know very well that to repress means more than to put away and to forget that which was put away and the place where we put it. It means also to maintain a constant psychological effort to keep the lid on and inwardly never relax our watchfulness."11
Individuals who keep denying the actual circumstances they are in and subsequently suppress this real situation and substitute it for something else, can be called neurotic individuals. These are not the few who are singled out and put away in a closed institution. No, this is about all of us. All of us possess, to some degree, the urge to suppress the actual situations in which we find ourselves, and try to imagine our situation in the world as being different. Fromm explains that the 'normal' person has the same characteristics as the common image of a neurotic person in a psychiatric institution:
"The phenomena which we observe in the neurotic person are in principle not different from those we find in the normal. They are only more accentuated, clear-cut, and frequently more accessible to the awareness of the neurotic person than they are in the normal who is not aware of any problem which warrants study."12
The suppression by the neurotic person becomes apparent as soon as the mechanism shows temporary signs of malfunctioning. It's the response we all have to the moment of clarity we experience during that romantic walk along the beach with our partner, at the beginning of chapter 1. At that moment it becomes clear to us that we are just part of nature, and that we've unconsciously known that all along, as Marcuse argues: "The brute fact of death denies once and for all the reality of a non-repressive existence".13
In part one we already made a division into different behavioural types with which The One Self can present itself. We made a distinction between three separate types: the negative type, which tends to have negative thoughts or feelings and has a certain resentment towards the world; the positive type, which takes action and quickly feels at home in every social context; the open type which views a situation from a distance and experiences a deeper consciousness of, or has deeper insight into, the surrounding world.
When we look at individuals as neurotics, we can take on a different view of this tripartition. This division runs parallel to that of part one, but with some differentiation.

BACKGROUND:
Born in Bonn, Germany, into a Dutch-German family. From early days on I was given a diplomatic German upbringing, with classical music and ballet along side jazz and a good sprinkle of cabaret. I entered an international era, living under diplomatic wing in East Block country Bulgaria and Third World country Liberia. With that I became a TCK, third culture kid.
Education started with six years of English at American schools in divers countries around the world. I finally settled in The Netherlands, finishing my primary education in English, and establishing myself in the Dutch language, entering the Leiden university, where I graduated with a master's degree (Dutch: drs./doctoranda or MA) in Art History and Classical Archaeology.
In the course of a winding professional career, I always sought to combine my language skills with professional research, writing, illustrating, editing and proofreading.
Several years engaged in producing educational new media products for the Dutch petro-chemical industry.
During my ten year commercial archaeology career, I was drilled by a German head of office to deliver high quality output with the utmost precision (legally sound) and efficiency.
I prepared and wrote contents, and translated them into English for archaeological exhibitions in the renown State Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, The Netherlands. i also wrote an English article on my research studies into ancient Mediterranean water management. My research publications on Dutch wetlands archaeology (Iron Age to Medievals) and Dutch inner city archaeology (late medieval and New Ages) are manifold (>150).
Within the last five years now, I've been focussing more on creative writing. This ranges from writing and translating children’s and public educational books on Dutch archaeology, into English and German, to translating a raw Dutch philosophical treatise into English. These projects have greatly motivated me to pursue new avenues, within and without my work field. I completed a creative writing course at the Dutch publishing house Querido in 2017/2018, during which I started working on a fictional novel in Dutch, based on my expat-family life during the rumbling late 1970s that preceded the onslaughts of civil war in Liberia, West-Africa. During this writing course I also started planning and researching for a non-fiction novel on my German family history during the years of German post-First World War and world crises and the Second World War (1923-1950).
I never ceased to have a high command of the German language (my actual mother tongue). To prove it to myself (and others of course) I attained the C2-level German certificate at the Goethe Institute in May 2019.
Although I can boast multiple language skills, I am well aware of Translation being a distinct profession. For this I have now (August 2019-) taken up intercultural communications studies, focussing on German translation, to professionalize my skills.
