Source text - English Imagine a Western scholar. He, or she, is typically from Europe or America. All his life, he has been exposed to Judaism, Christianity or Islam, religions that frown upon any overt display of sexuality. To him, sexuality is almost always an act of rebellion, an expression of defiance against the establishment. It is seen as being modern.
So imagine his surprise when he comes to India and encounters temples embellished with images of men and women in erotic embrace. Imagine his bewilderment when he finds Hindus worshipping an image shaped like a phallus called Shiva-linga. This is what his ancestors, a hundred years ago, also encountered, and condemned as pre-modern, licentious and savage. The scholar finds them vicariously liberating. Keen to study and understand these images, he hunts for a suitable academy. He finds none in India. So he enrols in a Western institution, where he is guided by Western academicians and is expected to follow methodologies developed and approved in the West. He starts reading texts as he would read the Bible, not realising that texts do not serve the same purpose in Hinduism. He decodes scriptures and images using his own cultural frameworks as the template. His conclusions are published in respected academic papers that win him accolades from Western academia, but they discomfort, even horrify, the average Hindu devotee.
Most Hindus become defensive and, like their 19th-century ancestors, go out of their way to strip Hinduism of its sexual heritage. A few, especially those with political leanings, react violently, outraged by the conclusions. Accused of cultural insensitivity, Western scholars strike back saying that Hindus do not know their own heritage and are still viewing Hinduism through the archaic Victorian lens. Battle lines are drawn. They are still drawn. Who is right, the arrogant academician or the stubborn devotee? It is in this context that I write this book.
I have noticed that the divide between Western academicians and Hindu devotees exists in their relative attention to form and thought. Form is tangible and objective, thought is intangible and subjective. Western scholars have been spellbound by the sexual form but pay scant regard to the metaphysical thought. In other words, they prefer the literal to the symbolic. Hindu devotees, in contrast, are so focused on the metaphysical thought that they ignore, or simply deny, the sexual form. The Western preference for form over thought stems from their cultural preference for the objective over the subjective. Hindus, on the other hand, are very comfortable with the subjective, hence can easily overlook form and focus on thought. This book seeks to bridge this wide gap between academics and practice.

എന്നാല്‍ ഇന്ത്യയിലേക്ക് അദ്ദേഹം വന്നാല്‍, ഇവിടുത്തെ സ്ത്രീ-പുരുഷന്മാര്‍ കാമപരവശരായി ആലിംഗനം ചെയ്യുന്ന ദൃശ്യങ്ങളാൽ അലങ്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ കാണുമ്പോഴുണ്ടാവുന്ന വികാരം എന്തായിരിക്കും? പുരുഷലിംഗത്തിന്‍റെ ഛായയുള്ള ശിവലിംഗം പോലുള്ള ബിംബങ്ങളെ ഹിന്ദുക്കള്‍ ആരാധിക്കുന്നത് കാണുമ്പോള്‍ എന്ത് അമ്പരപ്പായിരിക്കും, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്? ഇത് തന്നെയാണ് നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളായി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ പൂര്‍വികരും കാണുകയും, കാടത്തമെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് ആക്ഷേപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തത്. ഈ ദൃശ്യങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ച് പഠിക്കാനും മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും ഏതെങ്കിലും വിദ്യാലയമുണ്ടോ എന്ന് അന്വേഷിക്കാനിടയുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ അങ്ങനെ ഒരു സ്ഥാപനവും കണ്ടെത്താന്‍ കഴിയില്ല. അതുകൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു പാശ്ചാത്യവിദ്യാലയത്തില്‍ പോയി ചേരും. അവിടെ പാശ്ചാത്യപണ്ഡിതന്മാര്‍ അവര്‍ വികസിപ്പിച്ചെടുത്ത് അംഗീകാരം നേടിയ പഠനരീതികള്‍ ആവും പ്രയോഗിക്കുക. ബൈബിള്‍ പോലെയുള്ള ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങള്‍ വായിക്കുന്നത് പോലെ അദ്ദേഹം ഇവിടുത്തെ ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളും വായിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങും; ഹൈന്ദവമാര്‍ഗ്ഗത്തില്‍ ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളുടെ ലക്ഷ്യം എന്താണെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാവാതെ. പുരാണങ്ങളുടെയും ബിംബങ്ങളുടെയും അന്തസ്സത്ത മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്‍ അദ്ദേഹം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന രീതി അവരുടെ സാംസ്കാരിക ചട്ടക്കൂടുകളില്‍ കൂടെ ആയിരിക്കും. അങ്ങിനെ മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ നിഗമനങ്ങള്‍ പാശ്ചാത്യ പണ്ഡിതലോകത്ത് ഗവേഷണലേഖനങ്ങളിലൂടെ അദ്ദേഹം പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തും. അതിന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പ്രശംസകളും കിട്ടും. എന്നാല്‍ ഒരു ഹിന്ദു ഭക്തനെ ഇവ അലോസരപ്പെടുത്തുകയും, പേടിപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്യും.

Breaks in Field Operations
Innovative Management has taken a serious note of Teams taking multiple breaks in active Field Operations. This is affecting Operational efficiencies and exposing company to risk of thefts and ruining brand image.
Following instructions will be strictly enforced from 12th July’ 19 onwards regarding meal & other breaks while in active Field Operations: -
1. NO BREAKS, FOR ANY OPERATIONAL OR PERSONAL REASONS, ARE ALLOWED IN THE MIDDLE OF PERFORMANCE OF A SERVICE
2. A BREAK COULD ONLY BE TAKEN AFTER CONCLUDING A SERVICE AND UPON DEPOSITING THE VALUABLES BACK TO CASH VAN (ATM CASSETTES/BINS/CASH BAGS)
3. TEAMS ARE ONLY ALLOWED ONE HOUR BREAK IN THEIR DUTY HOURS AS PER COMPANY REGULATIONS. THIS COVERS MEALS, PRAYERS, TOILETS, SMOKE & REST.
4. TEAMS WILL TAKE THEIR BREAKFAST BEFORE JOINING THEIR DUTIES.
5. TEAMS CAN EAT BREAKFAST PACKS IN CASH VANS PROVIDED TOTAL BREAK TIMES FOR ALL BREAKS IN A DAY DOES NOT EXCEED ONE HOUR.
6. TEAMS ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO BUY ONE MEAL I.E. LUNCH OR DINNER WHILE THEY ARE IN FIELD DUTIES, IN A DAY, DEPENDING UPON IF THEY ARE ON MORNING OR EVENING SHIFTS.
7. TEAMS WILL NOT BUY ANY FOOD FROM RESTAURANTS OR BAKERIES DECLARED “OUT OF BOUND” BY SECURITY.
8. NOT MORE THAN TWO CASH VANS/CARS WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARK IN FRONT OF A RESTAURANT OR BAKERY.
9. ONLY ONE STAFF WILL GO AT A TIME TO BUY LUNCH OR DINNER WHILE OTHER TWO OR THREE STAFF WILL REMAIN IN THE CASH VAN/CAR WITH DOORS LOCKED.
10. TEAMS WILL ONLY TAKE BREAKS DURING TIMES WHICH DOES NOT AFFECT THEIR TIME BOUND SERVICES & SERVICE SLA’S.
11. ONLY ONE STAFF AT A TIME IS PERMITTED TO TAKE AN INDIVIDUAL BREAK
12. A MAX OF 15 MINUTES BREAK IS ALLOWED FOR ANY STAFF TO BE OUT OF VAN FOR A BREAK
13. FAILURE TO RETURN WITHIN THE ALLOWED TIME BRACKET OF 15 MINUTES, THE STAFF ON BREAK WILL BE CONSIDERED ABSCONDED AND NOTIFIED TO THE POLICE
14. NO SINGLE STAFF WILL ATTEND A CUSTOMER SITE ALONE FOR ANY PERSONAL OR OPERATIONAL REASONS
NOTE: DURING RAMADAN STAFF ARE ALLOWED TO CONSUME MEALS IN CASH VANS/CARS PROVIDED THEY ARE NOT VISIBLE TO PUBLIC. STAFF SHOULD RESPECT THEIR FELLOW STAFF WHO ARE FASTING AND AVOID EATING IN FRONT OF THEM.

1. ഒരു പ്രവൃത്തിനിർവ്വഹണത്തിനിടയിൽ ജോലി സംബന്ധമായതോ മറ്റു വ്യക്തിപരമായ കാരണങ്ങളാലോ ഉള്ള ഒരിടവേളയും അനുവദിക്കുന്നതല്ല.
2. പ്രവൃത്തി പൂർത്തീകരിച്ചതിനും, വിലയേറിയ വസ്തുക്കൾ ക്യാഷ് വാനിൽ നിക്ഷേപിച്ചതിനും ശേഷം മാത്രമേ ഇടവേള എടുക്കാൻ പാടുള്ളൂ (എടിഎം കാസെറ്റുകൾ/ബിന്നുകൾ/ക്യാഷ് ബാഗുകൾ എന്നിവ)
3. കമ്പനി നിയമങ്ങൾ അനുസരിച്ചു ടീമുകൾക്ക് അവരുടെ പ്രവൃത്തി സമയത്തിനിടയിൽ ഒരു മണിക്കൂർ ഇടവേളക്കുള്ള അനുവാദം ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കുന്നതാണ്. ഇതിൽ ഭക്ഷണം, പ്രാർത്ഥന, ടോയിലറ്റ് , പുകവലി , വിശ്രമം എന്നീ ആവശ്യങ്ങൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.
4. ജോലിക്ക് കയറുന്നതിനു മുൻപായി ടീമുകൾ പ്രാതൽ കഴിക്കേണ്ടതാണ്.
5. ഒരു ദിവസത്തേക്കുള്ള മുഴുവൻ ഇടവേളകൾക്കുമായുള്ള സമയം ഒരു മണിക്കൂറിൽ കൂടാത്ത രീതിയിൽ , ടീമുകൾക്ക് പ്രാതൽ ക്യാഷ് വാനിൽ നിന്നും കഴിക്കാവുന്നതാണ്.
6. ഒരു ദിവസത്തിൽ പ്രഭാത ഷിഫ്റ്റാണോ സായാഹ്ന ഷിഫ്റ്റാണോ എന്നതിനനുസരിച്ചു, ടീമുകൾക്ക് ഫീൽഡ് ജോലിക്കിടയിൽ ഒരു നേരത്തെ ഭക്ഷണം വാങ്ങാവുന്നതാണ്, അതായത് ഊണ് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അത്താഴം.
7. സുരക്ഷാ കാരണങ്ങളാൽ, പരിധിക്കപ്പുറം ആയി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള റെസ്റ്റോറന്റുകളിൽ നിന്നോ ബേക്കറികളിൽ നിന്നോ യാതൊരു ഭക്ഷണവും ടീമുകൾ വാങ്ങാൻ പാടുള്ളതല്ല.
8. രണ്ടിലധികം ക്യാഷ് വാനുകൾ/ കാറുകൾ എന്നിവ റെസ്റ്റോറന്റിനോ ബേക്കറിക്കോ മുൻപിൽ നിർത്തിയിടാൻ അനുവാദം ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കുന്നതല്ല.
9. ഒരു സമയത്തു ഒരാൾ മാത്രം ഊണോ അത്താഴമോ വാങ്ങാൻ പോവേണ്ടതും,ആ സമയം മറ്റുള്ള രണ്ടോ മൂന്നോ ജോലിക്കാർ ക്യാഷ് വാനിനകത്ത് തന്നെ വാതിലുകൾ പൂട്ടി ഇരിക്കേണ്ടതുമാണ്.
10. സമയബന്ധിതമായ സേവനങ്ങളെയും സേവന ഉറപ്പുകളേയും ബാധിക്കാത്ത സമയങ്ങളിൽ മാത്രമേ ടീമുകൾ ഇടവേളകൾ എടുക്കാൻ പാടുള്ളൂ.
11. ഒരു സമയം ഒരു ജോലിക്കാരനു മാത്രമേ വ്യക്തിയധിഷ്ടിതമായ ഇടവേള എടുക്കാൻ അനുവാദമുള്ളൂ.
12. ഒരിടവേളയിൽ പരമാവധി 15 മിനുട്ടുകൾ മാത്രം വാനിനു പുറത്തേക്ക് പോകുവാൻ മാത്രമേ ജോലിക്കാരന് അനുവാദമുള്ളൂ.
13. അനുവദിക്കപ്പെട്ട 15 മിനുട്ട് സമയ പരിധിക്കുള്ളിൽ തിരിച്ചെത്താത്ത പക്ഷം, ഇടവേളക്കായി പോയ ജോലിക്കാരൻ ഒളിച്ചു പോയതായി കരുതുന്നതും പോലീസിൽ അറിയിപ്പ് നൽകുന്നതുമാണ്.
14. ജോലി സംബന്ധമായതോ വ്യക്തിപരമോ ആയ യാതൊരു കാരണവശാലും ഒരു ജോലിക്കാരനും ഒരു ഉപഭോക്തൃ കേന്ദ്രവും ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് സന്ദർശിക്കുവാൻ പാടില്ല.
ശ്രദ്ധയ്ക്ക്: റമദാനിൽ പൊതുജനങ്ങൾ കാണാത്ത വിധം ജോലിക്കാർക്ക് ക്യാഷ് വാൻ/ കാറിനു അകത്തു ഇരുന്നു ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കാവുന്നതാണ്. ജോലിക്കാർ അവരുടെ നോമ്പെടുക്കുന്ന മറ്റു സഹപ്രവർത്തകരെ മാനിക്കേണ്ടതും അവരുടെ മുൻപിൽ നിന്നും ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കുന്നത് ഒഴിവാക്കേണ്ടതുമാണ്.

കള്ളുഷാപ്പുകള്‍ പകല്‍മുഴുവന്‍ തുറന്നിരിക്കുമെങ്കിലും സന്ധ്യ കഴിഞ്ഞ ശേഷമായിരിക്കും ആളുകളുടെ തിരക്കു തുടങ്ങുക. പകല്‍ മുഴുവന്‍ സദാശിവന്‍ ഔത്സുക്യത്തോടെ കാത്തിരുന്നെങ്കിലും ആ ശുഭ്രവസ്ത്രധാരിയുടെ നിഴലാട്ടംപോലും ഉണ്ടായില്ല. ആളുകള്‍ സദായണ്ണന്‍ എന്നുകൂടി വിളിക്കാറുള്ള സദാശിവന്‍ സായംസന്ധ്യകളില്‍ ദേവന്മാരുടെ ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ക്കു മുമ്പില്‍ ധൂപങ്ങള്‍ ഉഴി യുന്ന കാര്യത്തില്‍ ഒരിക്കലും മുടക്കം വരുത്തിയിട്ടില്ല. ഗണപതിഭഗവാന്‍റെയും ശ്രീനാരായണഗുരുവിന്‍റെയും ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ക്കുമുമ്പില്‍ ധൂപമുഴിഞ്ഞു കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോഴായിരുന്നു ഷാപ്പിന്‍റെ വാതില്‍ക്കല്‍ നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ആ ശുഭ്രവസ്ത്രധാരി അയാളുടെ ദൃഷ്ടിയില്‍പ്പെട്ടത്. “ഞാന്‍ എന്തേ ഇത്രയധികം ഔത്സുക്യം കാട്ടുന്നു?” അയാള്‍ സ്വയം ചോദിച്ചുപോയി.
അടുത്തുചെന്ന് നിരീക്ഷിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ സദാശിവനു മനസ്സിലായി അയാള്‍ ശരാശരി ഉയരക്കാരനും മധ്യവയസ്സ് പിന്നിട്ടയാളുമാണെന്ന്. കാലം ആ മുഖത്തെ ദൃഢപ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നെങ്കിലും ചുളിവുകള്‍ വളരെ കുറവായിരുന്നു. കൂര്‍ത്ത മുഖവും മൂക്കുമൊക്കെയായിരുന്നു അയാളുടേത്. ഒരിക്കല്‍ വെളുത്ത നിറക്കാരനായിരുന്ന അയാള്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ വെയിലേറ്റ് കരുവാളിച്ച് ചുവപ്പുകലര്‍ന്ന തവിട്ടുനിറക്കാരനായി മാറിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഏതാനും കറുത്തയിഴകളോടുകൂടിയ നരച്ചു നീണ്ട മുടി ഒരുണ്ടയുടെ ആകൃതിയില്‍ ചണച്ചരടുപയോഗിച്ച് ഉച്ചിയിന്മേല്‍ കെട്ടിവച്ചിരിക്കയായിരുന്നു അയാള്‍.
ആ മുഖത്ത് പൊതുവേ രോമങ്ങള്‍ കമ്മിയായിരുന്നു. താടിയൊഴിച്ചാല്‍ മേല്ചുണ്ടിന്മേല്‍ ഏതാനും നീണ്ട രോമങ്ങള്‍ മാത്രം. ക്ലീന്‍ഷേവ് ചെയ്തിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ കുറെക്കൂടി ചെറുപ്പവും ഭംഗിയും തോന്നിച്ചേനേ അയാള്‍ക്ക്. കഴിഞ്ഞ രാത്രിയില്‍ സദാശിവന്‍ കണ്ട അതേ വേഷത്തിലായിരുന്നു ആ അപരിചിതന്‍. കഴുകി വെടിപ്പാക്കാത്ത വെളുത്ത മുണ്ടും ഷര്‍ട്ടും. അയാളുടെ നീണ്ടു തഴമ്പിച്ച കാല്‍പാദങ്ങള്‍ നഗ്നങ്ങളായിരുന്നു; വാച്ചോ മോതിരമോ ഒന്നും ധരിച്ചിരുന്നില്ലതാനും. അലഞ്ഞുതിരിയുന്ന ഭിക്ഷുവിന്‍റെ ഒരനുസാരികയുമുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല അയാളുടെ പക്കല്‍. എങ്കിലും ആ പെരുമാറ്റരീതികളും, ശാന്തമായ മുഖഭാവവും, ആഴമുള്ള ആ കറുത്ത കണ്ണുകളും കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ സദാശിവനു തോന്നി താന്‍ ഏതോ പുണ്യപുരുഷനെ, ഒരു യോഗിയെ, തനിക്കറിയാമായിരുന്ന ഏതോ ഒരാളിനെ അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കുകയാണെന്ന്. ആ സമയത്ത് അവിടെ ധൂപങ്ങളുടെ സൗരഭ്യം പ്രസരിക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു താനും.
Translation - English Breakfast, one more paracetamol and a few bandaids later, Sadasivan was ready to go. As usual he rode to Toddy Shop No. 420 and opened it. Toddy shops are open all day but rush hour is usually after sunset. Toddy has been, for hundreds of years, the favourite spirituous beverage of Malayalis. Sadasivan waited eagerly the whole day. No sign of the madman. At sunset, ‘Sada annan’, or big brother Sada, never failed to offer incense before the pictures of the gods in his shop. He had just finished offering incense to the elephant-headed god Ganesha and the photo of Sri Narayana Guru, a holy man and social reformer, when he saw the strange man standing at the door. ‘Why am I so excited?’ he wondered to himself.
Examining him closely now, Sadasivan found him to be of medium height and well past middle-age. Time had toughened his face but wrinkles were few. He had sharp features and his once fair complex ion was now sunburned to a reddish brown. He had long grey hair with a few black streaks, which he had gathered into a bun and secured on the crown of his head with a jute string.
Apart from the beard, he had a few long strands on his upper lip. With a clean shave he would have looked younger and handsome. He was in the same outfit as he was the previous night—unwashed white mundu and shirt. His large calloused feet were bare and he wore neither watch nor finger-ring, nor any of the paraphernalia of a wandering mendicant. Yet something about his demeanour, the calmness of his expression, and his dark, deep-set eyes made Sadasivan feel that he was facing a holy man, a sage, a man who knew. And then there was that mild fragrance of incense.

Almost 3 year experience in Professional translation. I had translated more than 5 Lakh words in the language pairs English-Malayalam & Malayalam-English till date. I had translated more than 1 Lakh words in One Hour Translation alone. Had Completed more than 1500 projects without even a single project abandoned or uncompleted. I love doing translation, machine translation editing , Proof reading , reviewing, Romanization, annotation, transcription, localization of apps and sites etc. As a movie buff I even love subtitling. I truly believe that Duty is Worship. I always make sure that the work is completed in time. I am happy to say that I am a dedicated freelancer who is keen in keeping time and quality.
