Spanish term

fracción generatriz

Spanish to English Science Mathematics & Statistics Fractions
This is taken from a Spanish school text book in a chapter on rational numbers. The exercise calls for pupils to calculate the number of shares based on the total capital stock. The question asks:

"Calcula el valor de cada acción y cual es la fracción generatriz"

Thanks!

Discussion

lugoben Apr 9, 2015:
Fracción generatriz It doesn't matter if the decimal number is an exact number, a decimal with different digits or with repeating digits or whatever digit combination thereof. The "fracción generatriz" will only present a slightly different way for calculating it. As it is not identified in the context, no further analysis would be necessary.
DLyons Apr 9, 2015:
repeating decimals? Is there any evidence that repeating decimals are actually involved here? The number of shares is an integer (the numerator), as is the total stock (the denominator). Presumably one then simplifies that fraction. Why would one want to express the result as a repeating decimal (even if it accidentally happened to be one)?

Could be a neat option if you are looking for something that sounds less intimidating and avoids the gratuitous use of terminology.

convert a decimal number intof raction

Cualquier resultado que resute un número decimal puede ser expresado como fracción y esta fracción se llama generatriz.

Converting fractions to decimals is just another way of expressing division. The same tools you use to divide whole numbers help you turn a fraction into a decimal.

fraction in its lowest terms

As James says, it's the corresponding fraction. But I think the point here is to cancel out common terms and leave the fraction as e.g. 3/10, rather an 30% or 30/100.
Peer comment(s):

agree ___jck___ : Excellent point, I forgot how lazy some students can be, although I wonder if the original is perhaps ambiguous with respect to reduction!

the repeating decimals generating fraction

For instance, (1/3) = 0.33333333333333333333333

(1/3) is the "fracción generatriz." Why? Because by dividing one by three, one generates the repeating decimals (3 is repeated ad infinitum) in the right hand side of the equation above.
