Norwegian term

datamengde

Discussion

brigidm (asker) Jan 29, 2007:
No-one's mentioned "data sets". Which is actually what my technical dictionary says, and for which I got quite a lot of hits in conjunction with scaling up. I wasn't sure at first but now wonder whether that may be the correct translation. Comments appreciated.
Per Bergvall Jan 28, 2007:
Whether it's data volume or data quantity is immaterial - either is fine in a storage capacity setting, while in a transaction capacity setting, I'd understand huge data volume as many transactions, data quantity as biig data amounts in each transaction.
brigidm (asker) Jan 28, 2007:
Would a bit more context help? The previous sentence reads: "I databaselaget finnes SQL Server 2005. Denne databasen skalerer opp til de største datamengder og mest kompliserte og krevende applikasjoner, analyser av data og rapportering av resultater for raskere returnering av informasjon. " Then later, under "Konvertering": "Konvertering av de relativt store datamengdene er kritisk for prosjektets suksess".

Yes, you are right, Brigid, there are 33,900 Google hits for "scales up" + "data sets". (I think it is one of these cases, where the author of the source doc made a bad choice; it could be a bad English into Norwegian translation of "datamengde"). The Danish equivalent of data sets is "datasæt", according to Euridicatum. "Data sets" has a different definition than "datamengde"/"data stocks". In www.thefreedictionary.com:
"Data sets": "A collection of related data records on a computer-readable medium, such as a disk."
Example sentence:

"MP3 Archiver" is a tool for managing and representing MP3 data stocks.

SAP BW also helped us migrate the olddata from PAISY to SAP R/3, to clean the data stocks effectivelyand efficiently.

data volume

I don't in the least envy you the lingo struggle here - 'databasen skalerer opp til' is all but senseless - but at least data volume is pretty clear.

agree Bjørnar Magnussen : Or maybe "volume of data" in order to avoid confusion with "data volume" as a unit of data storage, e.g. a hard disk drive.

Sure it's ambiguous, as is the source. There is no way we can know whether 'datamengder' is the amount of data processed or the amount stored. The translation SHOULD be just as ambiguous. Chances are it's a storage thing, as that's what databases are for.
