Italian term

stile morbido nei colpi; astuto nella applicazione

Italian to English Social Sciences Sports / Fitness / Recreation
For an article about 1950s Italian tennis champ Lea Pericoli:

Tenace, combattiva, aggressiva, intelligente ha saputo proporre uno stile morbido nei colpi ed astuto nella applicazione.

colpi = strokes? hits? I would really appreciate some help in structuring this phrase if any tennis buffs feel so inclined.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion

Well, if her style was "soft" in strokes but astute in application I think I am probably safe in using the easy return there, and the lob later (where it really does say "lob"). Thanks for the tennis expertise!
Jim Tucker (X) Jun 25, 2007:
A lob is a very specific term for a high return designed to drive the opponent to the back court. It is not a synonym for an easy return. If it says lob twice, you should use it twice.

For those who are interested in exploring the phrase itself, I have been researching this and I think something like, "she was able to make keen use of her signature easy returns".

I read she used a lot of lobs; a lob is considered an "easy return". I do not want to repeat "lob" however as it is used in the next sentence.

Any comments (or, more likely, corrections) to what I've got so far?
xlationhouse (asker) Jun 25, 2007:
I believe the limit is 10 words; here there are 7. One can of course choose to answer only part of it.

(Note: the "whole sentence" is written below the term/phrase (yes, KudoZ does suggest a term or PHRASE). The sentence is 16 words and I would not presume to post the entire thing.

Thank you for your comment.
writeaway Jun 25, 2007:
you really should post this as 2 separate questions-the whole sentence is much too long for a kudoz question.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks desertfox! I did not use your translation but found your suggestion helpful and moreover found it more appropriate for a glossary entry than mine for structural reasons."
