Discussion

Trudy Peters May 3, 2006:
You shouldn't have closed the question so soon. As you can see, we're still having fun with it :-)
Francis Lee (X) May 3, 2006:
Any reason to stick with the German? Is this for a test, by any chance? If you're interested, the English media are referring to a "face-off" bzw. "sharpen claws".
Francis Lee (X) May 3, 2006:
And is this a headline? If not, can you provide the paragraph it's in? It makes a big difference!
Francis Lee (X) May 3, 2006:
I swear, I KNEW it would be about Paris and Pink (having read Zickenkrieg in that very context on the teletext last night). But what's your context here? Who (and in what part of the world) will be reading the translation, for example?

battle of the bitches

How about "battle of the bitches"?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Francis Lee (X) : but you wouldn't see this in any half-respectable English-speaking publication/ In the taz - yes. But generally speaking, Zickenkrieg or e.g. "Sch**ße" are far more "acceptable" terms than their English equivalents. Compare Kerner with Wogan (chat shows)

Fair 'nuff, but would you see "Zickenkrieg" in any half-respectable German-speaking publication?
agree Stephen Sadie : a post-grading agree as we both had the same (good) answer

neutral TonyTK : Afraid I have to agree with Francis - "bitches" might well be a bit crass ...

Not sure - you wouldn't see it in the Times, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it in the kind of publications that run this kind of story

Note from asker:
Funny how men think of them as bitches straight away.... ;-)
Peer comment(s):

neutral Francis Lee (X) : not appropriate language for a news item IMO / I beg to disagree. And why can't you both be "wrong" ? (not my choice of word) // Sure I could be, but I'm only expressing my opinion, Stepehen ;-)

i posted my answer independent of ian's and don't think we were both wrong!//why can't YOU be wrong?

I haven't the foggiest what you are talking about or who these people are but check out the following link

Note from asker:
Pink is a rock/pop singer and Paris Hilton is the spoilt daughter of the Hilton hotel-chain owner.
Peer comment(s):

agree Trudy Peters : Definitely! And if you don't know who these people are, you haven't missed anything :-) / You're right, Tony, Pink has some common sense.

agree TonyTK : Hilton appears to be the ultimate bimbo, but Pink's "Stupid Girl" ain't half bad.
