Comment: "I think physician assistant is the right translation of Artzfachhelfer. Here is a defintion:
A physician assistant (P.A.) is a licensed health professional who practices medicine under the supervision of a physician
A medical assitant is not one who works with a doctor as a physician assistant and Artztfachhelfer does. this definition set me on the right path. Many thanks."

Medical Assistant
Arztfachhelfer=Arzthelfer. Depending on the responsibilities, Physician Assistant might work, too.

paramedic
this is widely used term for persons who are vocationally trained to assist doctors

: According to LEO, paramedic means "Notarzt", which has a different meaning than the "Arztfachhelfer" here. http://dict.leo.org/ende?lp=ende&lang=de&searchLoc=0&cmpType...
