Author and Translator: A conversation
Madeleine will be presenting on her book Children of Clay, which is a translation of Raymond Queneau's Les Enfants du limon. Madeleine’s translation was published by the Sun & Moon Press, and won the French American Foundation Translation Prize in 1998.
Read what critics have said about the book and Madeleine’s translation:
"Children of Clay is full of phonetic spellings, double-entendres, portmanteau words and typographical horseplay. Madeleine Velguth's translation of these oddities is nothing short of heroic." - William Ferguson, The New York Times Book Review
"Longer and darker than Queneau's better-known novels, Children of Clay seems still fresh 60 years after its original publication: a Modernist novel of failed hierarchies and the quest to recover order in old texts, brought up like an exotic deep-sea creature into the light of day." - Gregory Feeley, The Washington Post
Kari and Susana will discuss the insights, challenges and rewards of the relationship between author and translator. This is a rare chance to peer into this relationship and the opportunity for discovery that it affords to both.
Kari Lydersen is a regular contributor to AlterNet, also writes for the Washington Post and is an instructor for the Urban Youth International Journalism Program in Chicago. Ms Lydersen also contributes regularly to contratiempo magazine, where her work appears translated into Spanish.
Susana Galilea is an accredited translator with over 15 years of experience in cross-cultural communications. She is a frequent contributor to contratiempo magazine, where she has translated many of the articles by Ms. Lydersen.
