Similar Oxford impressions + suggestion: Berlin for next year Nov 29, 2004

Hi all,

I enormously enjoyed meeting so many ProZians in person, and learnt a lot as well. As I said in a private email earlier today, nothing comes really close to meeting people face to face, despite all the existing ways and means to meet in the virtual world of the Internet.

To add to the variety, I've already offered to Henry to scale up the (usual) Berlin powwow next year, and to make a two-day conference out of it (perhaps in mid-June). I might be able to

I might be able to use my university contacts in order to organise conference facilities. If all works out well, I could even imagine booth training for simultaneous interpreters to be provided as part of the event (of course no guarantee yet for this but my former university department has got a room equipped specifically for that purpose).

Also, Berlin is closer to Poland than Cologne, isn't it? So let's move east -> Cracow would then be the logical next step to be taken in 2006 ...

Best,

Steffen

My head votes for Cologne*, my heart votes for Cracow, my accountant votes for somewhere Ryanair flies to.

Berlin and Krakow both get my vote Nov 29, 2004

But then I might be just as happy with St. Petersburg, the Bahamas, Sydney, or wherever.

What I learned in Oxford:
That there are a whole bunch of really GREAT prozians out there!

Thanks to Henry for organizing it all. It was truly an awesome experience (and Lucy loved it too!)

Krakow or Koeln?

I would be all too happy to participate in any super-powwow that is easily accessible (somewhere in Europe).

Oxford: although I participated only on Saturday, I enjoyed it so much! So much learnt, so many friendly faces, so much encouragement!

Still in London till Tuesday night,

Csaba

wherever cheap airlines fly to Nov 30, 2004

Which would make a German city a good idea. I like the idea of Berlin. Was too busy to attend in the UK, in the summer would (should?) be better.
This summer I took the opportunity to look up some of my cyber colleagues in the Netherlands and in Spain - meeting more of you in one place would be even better!

The thinking behind Krakow,,, Nov 30, 2004

If we were to meet in Krakow, then perhaps more of the Eastern European proz members would be able to attend as it might be easier for them to get visas.

Don´t think Kraków lies behind a wall ... Nov 30, 2004

Beside Kraków there is another airport in Katowice-Pyrzowice, located only one and half hour from the City of Kraków, so you can pretty good fly there, for example from London, Cologne, Dortmund, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, Budapest, Prag, Vienna, Milano, Rome, Zurich, Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt...
There is even a connection to Chicago!

Jerzy

Eastern Europe and visas Nov 30, 2004

Romanian citizens don't need a visa for the EU, and I think this also applies for Bulgarians. So you just get on the bus/plane and go. No further inconveniences. Which means Germany is ok.

And I also think that Germany is more accessible in terms of cheap flights.

Berlin, naturally! Nov 30, 2004

Since Steffen is already putting his efforts and connections to work in organizing a super-powwow in Berlin, my vote goes to Berlin. And June is a lovely time of year for it!

Go Steffen go! Berlin yeah Berlin!

rah,
sylvie

Feedback on the Oxford Conference Nov 30, 2004

Suggestion for software training session Nov 30, 2004

One suggestion I would make for future software training sessions would be to split them into 2 groups; one for people who don't yet have the software and want to learn about the basics and a separate group for current users. The 2-hour SDL training session started with a 30-minute PP sales presentation and I had expected to learn more about the intricacies of the programme. Really sorry I missed this one, but I burned up my leave at the last mega-powwow in BAires, went back to studying, and was down with flu for the weekend anyway...

As if I didn't know it - I DO - there are so many wonderful Prozians out almost anywhere (Kiribati, anyone?)

But a US/North American conference would be great; I'd, in this case, opt for a cosmopolitan, international venue (the Apple? That's close enough to Canada, only several hours away from Europe, and could make for a nice pre-holiday).

A European conference could be held anywhere close to the already-burgeoning no-frills airline trade (reorganising these last few months to give a better, more coordinated service that will now include Switzerland). That certainly puts Germany at an advantage, although eastern Europe and the expansion countries have their points. A study of the possibilities on the ground might help decide things (this is going to be like the Olympic city candidacies, I can just see it...)

Not to create conflict, the two options could be adequately-spaced and designed to focus on complementary topics.

Early June rather than mid-June? Nov 30, 2004

If it were early June of next year, I'd just about be able to make it. My flight to Europe is booked for mid-May and I don't want to stay more than 3 weeks...Mexico (where I live) is a long way away!
