I can't make the talk, but will seek out the book.
David Bellos is the excellent translator of Georges Perec's Life A User's Manual and a number of other works by Perec, one of my favourite writers. | | | Read the book! | Sep 18, 2011 |

His theory on translation "up" (to a language with more prestige or more readers) versus translation "down" (to a vernacular language with less prestige or fewer readers) is intriguing, but I think it needs more investigation. He disproved his own theory a few paragraphs after laying it out. I would argue translation "up" and "down" would depend on the function of the text. Still, it's an intriguing concept.
Also, the history of the birth of simultaneous interpretation was great. Mind. Blown. ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » How translation shapes our everyday lives Pastey | Your smart companion app
