Hello, I need to teach CAT tools, but I'm unable to use the original materials I translated for various reasons. What materials could I use as source texts for students to translate that would expose them to typical design, formatting, and localization challenges? Any suggestions? | | |

I think with the experience you have under your belt, copy-pasting text from reputable sources (open enough to not infringe copyrights), you can get some good results.
You could even write your own.
Usually something short is enough to demonstrate what you want to show.
What I would recommend is to clean up any text before pasting it if it's coming from the web. If you go down the web-converter pdf route, you'll end up in tag-ridden soup as we all know.
My advice summed up:
Be in control of when and where a challenge is added. A paragraph that will produce a vast number of tags can be good if you want to teach them cleanup-before-CAT techniques, or introduce hard returns to force unwanted segmentation to be corrected later etc.
If you make it, you know what and when to teach without overwhelming your students with too many issues at once.

I don't think any CAT tool would expose your students to "typical design, formatting", because the exported target language file will be exactly the same in terms of design and formatting as the source file.
So, CAT tools and "design, formatting" are unrelated topics. In other words, you may have to treat them as two independent topics.

However, I'm primarily working with original texts in Spanish, and in the classroom, I need to illustrate these texts in English.
