If a tree grows and it is cut away from its roots, then that tree will die. This is something I really believe.
When I was sixteen, I won the gold medal in figure skating at the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway. I was the first Ukrainian gold medallist after the fall of the Soviet Union. I was a tree with branches growing tall and strong. I was on top of the world. Many people know this story. They know how I lost my mother to ovarian cancer when I was thirteen and how my father left us when I was two. They know how much determination it took me to get through those events, to go to America and train, and then finally, to get the gold.
What they don’t know is the story of how I became an adult, the story of how I developed a full life that wasn’t just about professional success, the story of how I grew my roots.
What do you do after you’re a gold medallist? You’re flying high, and then what? First I had to make the transition to professional skating — which was hard because it was more about performing and entertaining than about precision and technical skill. I was sixteen, and my body started changing shape, just as you might predict for a girl that age — but no one told me what to expect, or what I needed to eat to maintain fitness for my skating. And life in
America, wow! There was low-carb this and low-fat that and sugar free this and a million options for everything you ever wanted to buy. I didn’t know what to do — so I entertained myself by buying and trying everything.
For years, it was just me and the entertaining, and there was no one else in my life. I’d go on tour with all the skaters, who were my friends, and then I’d come home, and it was just me, alone, in my apartment. I didn’t really trust a lot of people. There were always lots of people around, but they were being paid by me. I started drinking a lot. My doctor told me I had a problem with alcohol. Olympic champions don’t have any problems, you know? They’re just supposed to go out there and skate. At least that’s what the magazines tell you.
But then when I was about twenty-three, things started changing. I somehow knew I couldn’t spend the rest of my life concentrating only on the skating. There was more to being a person than that, and I had to be ready and willing to find it.
One day during the holiday season that year, a friend invited me to a Christmas party. I didn’t want to go, but she forced me to. And this guy, Gene, was there, and he was so fun to talk to, and so nice. . . .
We’re nowmarried.
Being with Gene took a lot of my fear away. Creating a life with him gave me the opportunity to spread my wings outside the public eye, to take time off from touring, to enjoy small things, like going to the grocery store and cooking dinner, to relax and be myself. Before that, every time I went to a restaurant, all I could pay attention to was playing the part for people who asked me for autographs. Now, I have a personal life. I still talk to those fans, but I remember that I’m there to eat dinner, not put on a show.

But I’ve also managed to do something even riskier.
This past September, I turned to Gene and told him that I was ready to find my birth father — that I knew he was out there somewhere back in the Ukraine and that I was strong enough to find him. We tried everything — from Red Cross tracing services to the Ukrainian Federation — with no luck. Finally, I decided to just pick up the phone and dial my old skating rink in Dnipropetrovsk, the small town where I grew up. When someone answered on the other end, he identified himself as the director of the skating rink. I was so happy to hear his voice!
I began by introducing myself, “Hi, this is Oksana Baiul . . .”
He hung up on me immediately. I called back and he told me not to play practical jokes. I said, “I swear to you, this is Oksana Baiul.” And I started naming all the people I knew in town and what the rink looked like, and finally he believed me.
You would not believe what this guy did for us. He searched from door to door until finally he knocked on the right door, and my father answered. And when we got the news that he had found Sergei Baiul, Gene and I nervously bought tickets to head back to the Ukraine.
My father left my mother and me when I was two. He never remarried. And he still lived in the same house, on the same little quiet street, with my grandmother. Knocking on that door after all these years and seeing him answer was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done.
I also went back to my mother’s grave for the first time since I was thirteen.
This was the hardest part for me: I was nervous. And I’d been through so much. And I missed her so much.
And then I went back to the skating rink where I had learned to skate. And there were tons of little kids there, surrounding me. They remembered me after all these years and looked up to me. And they grabbed my hands and said, “Oksana, Oksana, come, come, let me show you where we have your picture on the wall.” I had spent all those years in the United States feeling lonely, and the whole time there were all these kids who looked up to me. It really put things in perspective.
We’re planning to do a charity show for those kids at the skating rink next year. And just a few weeks ago, I got a phone call from my dad, who asked me for my address. I couldn’t figure out why he wouldn’t just email me a message or call, but then I got a birthday card in the mail from him — the first birthday card since I was two years old. I have my father back.
It’s been a roller coaster, but I’ve learned that no matter what happens, no matter what challenges life brings, you have to just take a few big breaths, believe in yourself, and pick yourself back up. If things are bad and it’s hard to be alive . . . well, things will get better. You really just have to believe it. That’s all. You have to believe.
There is a higher power, and you can ask for help to get through the tough moments. And most important, you can also reach out to those around you. Surrounding yourself with people whom you love, with a community, is so important. I would never in a million years give up that gold medal. But at the end of the day, our experiences mean so much more when we have people to share them with. For me, it’s Gene, it’s my father, and it’s the thought of those kids back at my old skating rink in the Ukraine.
These are the things that sustain me — my roots.

Saben cuánto coraje me hizo falta para sobreponerme a esos acontecimientos, para ir a Estados Unidos a entrenar y para, finalmente, ganar el oro.
Lo que no saben es la historia acerca de cómo me convertí en adulta; la historia de cómo desarrollé una vida plena que no tenía solamente que ver con el éxito profesional; la historia de cómo eché raíces.

Yo no sabía qué hacer, así que me entretuve comprando y probándolo todo.
Durante varios años, éramos simplemente el entretenimiento y yo. No había nadie más en mi vida. Me iba de gira con los demás patinadores, que eran mis amigos, y cuando volvía a casa sólo estaba yo, sola, en mi apartamento. En realidad, no había muchas personas en las que confiara. Siempre había mucha gente a alrededor de mí, pero era toda gente a la que yo le pagaba. Comencé a beber mucho. Mi médico me dijo que tenía problemas con el alcohol. Pero... los campeones olímpicos no tienen problemas, ¿sabes? Supuestamente, los campeones simplemente deben salir y patinar, o, al menos, eso es lo que te dicen las revistas.
A los veintitrés años, las cosas comenzaron a cambiar. De alguna manera supe que no podía pasar el resto de mi vida concentrándome únicamente en el patinaje. Ser una persona implicaba más que eso, y tenía que prepararme para querer saber qué era.
Un día, durante las fiestas de fin de año, una amiga me invitó a una fiesta de Navidad. Yo no tenía muchas ganas de asistir, pero ella me obligó. Y estaba este chico, Gene, y era tan divertido hablar con él, él era tan agradable....
Ahora, estamos casados.
El estar con Gene me sacó muchos de mis miedos. El construir una vida con él me dio la posibilidad de abrir mis alas por fuera del ámbito público, de descansar de las giras; de disfrutar de las pequeñas cosas, como ir al almacén y preparar la cena, de relajarme y ser yo misma. Antes, cada vez que iba a un restaurante, lo único a lo que podía prestar atención era a representar un personaje para la gente que me pedía autógrafos. Ahora, tengo una vida personal. Aún hablo con mis fanáticos, pero recuerdo que estoy allí para cenar, y no para montar un espectáculo.

También me las he arreglado para llevar a cabo algo mucho más arriesgado.
En Septiembre de este año, le dije a Gene que estaba preparada para encontrar a mi padre biológico; que yo sabía que él estaba vivo en alguna parte de Ucrania, y que era lo suficientemente fuerte para encontrarme con él. Intentamos todo: desde los servicios de búsqueda de la Cruz Roja hasta la Federación Ucraniana, pero no tuvimos suerte. Finalmente, me decidí simplemente a tomar el teléfono y marcar el número de mi antigua pista de patinaje en Dnipropetrovsk, el pequeño pueblo en el que crecí. Alguien atendió del otro lado y se identificó como el director de la pista de patinaje. ¡Me alegró tanto oír su voz!
Comencé por presentarme: “Hola, soy Oksana Baiul...”
Me cortó inmediatamente. Volví a llamar y me dijo que no hiciera bromas. Le dije: "Te lo juro, habla Oksana Baiul", y comencé a nombrar a todas las personas del pueblo que conocía, y cómo lucía la pista, y finalmente me creyó.
No van a poder creer lo que este hombre hizo por nosotros. Fue de puerta en puerta, hasta que un día golpeó en la puerta correcta, y fue atendido por mi padre. En cuanto recibimos la noticia de que había encontrado a Sergei Bauil, Gene y yo, con muchos nervios, fuimos a comprar boletos para volver a Ucrania.
Mi padre nos abandonó a mi madre y a mí cuando yo tenía dos años. Nunca volvió a casarse; y aún vivía en la misma casa, en la misma callejuela tranquila, con mi abuela. El golpear a su puerta después de tantos años, y verlo abrirla, fue una de los desafíos más grandes con los que me enfrenté en mi vida.
También volví a visitar la tumba de mi madre, por primera vez desde que tenía trece años. Esto fue lo más difícil. Estaba nerviosa; y había pasado por muchas cosas, ¡y la extrañaba tanto!
Luego, volví a la pista de patinaje en la que había aprendido a patinar. Estaba llena de chiquillos, que me rodearon. Me recordaban, después de tantos años, y me admiraban. Y me agarraban de las manos y me decían: "Oksana, Oksana, ven, ven, déjame mostrarte dónde hemos colgado tu foto en la pared". Había pasado todos esos años en Estados Unidos sintiéndome sola, mientras que aquí estaban todos estos niños que me admiraban. Esto realmente me hizo ver las cosas en perspectiva.
Estamos planeando hacer un espectáculo de beneficencia el año próximo para esos niños en la pista de patinaje; y hace apenas unas semanas, recibí un llamado de mi padre, para preguntarme mi dirección. No se me ocurría por qué simplemente no me llamaba, o me mandaba un mensaje por correo electrónico, hasta que recibí de su parte una tarjeta de cumpleaños por correo: la primer tarjeta de cumpleaños desde que tenía dos años. Había recuperado a mi padre.
Todo esto ha sido como una montaña rusa, Pero he aprendido que, no importa lo que suceda, no importa los desafíos que la vida nos presente, sólo hace falta respirar profundamente, creer en uno mismo y volver a levantarse. Si las cosas van mal, y es difícil mantenerse vivo, bueno... ya mejorarán. Sólo tienes que creerlo, eso es todo. Tienes que creerlo.
Existe un poder superior al que uno puede pedirle ayuda para atravesar los momentos difíciles. Y, lo que es más importante, uno también puede pedirle ayuda a aquellos que están a su alrededor. ¡Es tan importante rodearse por la gente que uno ama, por una comunidad! No renunciaría a mi medalla de oro ni en un millón de años; pero, al caer la noche, nuestras experiencias son mucho más significativas cuando tenemos alguien con quién compartirlas. Para mí, ese alguien es Gene, es mi padre, y es el recuerdo de esos chiquillos que están en mi antigua pista de patinaje en Ucrania.
Estas son las cosas que me sostienen: mis raíces.

Our group of collaborators consists of graduated translators, editors, proofreaders and interpreters with a minimum 3-year experience in the field of translation they specialize in. In order to be part of our team, they must pass a translation/edition test related to a specific field before being able to join us. They are also savvy in CAT tools and language-specific topics.
We offer our linguists constant training on IT and CAT tools so as to be able to cope with jobs using different tools so useful and essential today in the translation industry.
Our resources have access to the following software/hardware:
- Microsoft Office Suite 2003 and higher.
- Adobe InDesign, FrameMaker, PageMaker, Acrobat as well as Acrobat Reader.

For edition services: 15,000 words per day
For proofreading services*: 20,000 words per day (*proofreading involves, in our terms, reading only the translated text so as to detect Spanish-specific issues that may conflict with the proper understanding of the text by the target audience.)
Insight also offers Project Management services, where we take care of the project since the initial contact with the potential client to the final delivery, passing through the selection of appropriate translators, editors, and proofreaders for specific tasks, the evaluation of viable translators' costs, satisfying customers' needs, fulfilling deadlines set with the clients, analyzing documents as soon as the clients deliver them for linguistic purposes in order to ensure that deadlines can be met and that the files are not corrupted so that translators can start working right away, communicating the translators on their progress on the projects, and, as a whole, forecasting any kind of problem that could be faced during the translation/edition/proofreading process (TEP).
