Pour Claude Hagège, professeur au Collège de France et, par ailleurs, lauréat de la médaille d’or du CNRS, le français garde sa vocation mondiale sur le plan culturel tout autant qu’au niveau des affaires. Eminent linguiste diplômé d’arabe, de chinois, d’hébreu et de russe, Claude Hagège a également étudié, entre autres langues, le nbum, le tikar, le mundang, le tuburi, le guiziga, le tcherhesse abhaze, le comox, le bachkir, le guarrani ou le kagehitel.
Il faut, dit-il, que les grandes entreprises françaises se déprennent de l’illusion que l’anglais est indispensable à leur fonctionnement et reconnaissent qu’il n’y a pas de vraie mondialisation qu’à travers la diversité et non dans l’attitude qui singe le modèle économique américain et s’abstient d’en inventer d’autres.
Et parce que la langue n’est « pas un simple instrument de communication immédiate et pratique mais reflète l’identité profonde d’un peuple » , l’auteur rappelle ici que « … défendre une culture, c’est aussi défendre la langue dans laquelle elle s’exprime » Accepter cette colonisation culturelle, c’est précipiter notre sujétion politique et économique.
Ni combat d’arrière garde nostalgique voire hégémonique, le combat pour la défense de la langue française sert aussi le multilinguisme : « La puissance économique, la prospérité et le succès commercial ne sauraient avoir pour rançon, et encore moins pour instrument, l’abandon de la diversité des langues et la soumission à une seule qui devrait les supplanter toutes »
Translation - English ‘French possesses everything necessary to be used for business and international exchanges between large companies and there is no need to let English be the only one to use (…) Soldiering for French is not seeing any contradiction between the historical knowledge of French and its communicative ability in the modern world’.
For the College de France professor and, in addition, CNRS gold medal holder Claude Hagège, French retains its calling in the world for both cultural and business arenas. An eminent linguist qualified in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew and Russian, Claude Hagège has also studied Nbum, Tikar, Mundang, Tuburi, Guiziga, Cherhesse Abhaze, Comox, Bachkir, Guarrani and Kagehitel amongst other languages.
He believes it is necessary for large French companies to move away from the delusion of English being essential for their performance and recognise that true globalisation only comes from diversity and not with the attitude marked by the American economic model in its resistance to any other being considered.
Since language is ‘not a simple instrument of instant and practical communication but, moreover, reflects the inner identity of a people’ , the author states here that ‘defending a culture is also a question of defending the language that that culture expresses itself in’ . Accepting this form of cultural colonisation is hastening our political and economic subjugation.
Fighting for the defence of French is also an aid to multilingualism and not a nostalgic or hegemonic rear guard action: ‘Economic power, prosperity and commercial success cannot come at the expense or, even less, be an instrument of abandoning linguistic diversity and submitting to a single language overtaking all others’ .
