I was born in 1952 in the town of Postojna, Slovenia (at that time one of the former Yugoslav republics). In Postojna I finished primary school (with English and Serbo-Croatian foreign languages) and secondary school (gymnasium) with English and Russian in the regular programme and Italian in additional courses. During the summer holidays I visited a few times my relatives in Italy and worked for two months in England. I was also helping my father doing some translations. He was employed as an export manager in a bigger timber factory, but occasionally he also did translations for other companies.

After secondary school I moved to Ljubljana to study architecture. During the first year's practice on construction site (theatre in Portorož) I also worked as a translator for the Italian workers on the site. As a student I participated in numerous excursions abroad and had many other contacts with foreign people and literature. In 1976 I travelled over Canada and the USA with two colleagues and organised several presentations of American architecture when I came back.

Unfortunately in 1976 there was a major earthquake in the Italian region of Friuli close to the Slovenian border and I had to help my parents to completely rebuild our grandmother's house in Bovec. In 1978 I had to serve in the army, so I finished my studies soon after that in 1979. After receiving my diploma I was employed as a designer in Ljubljana, but could not get a permanent job because there were too many architects and not enough work. During that period I spent six months in Florence, Italy.

After that I returned to Ljubljana and got a job as a designer on large projects for Russia and Middle East. I worked mostly on food processing and storage plants, wood processing plants, hotels and hospitals. A lot of technology in these projects came from western countries and the documentation was in foreign languages, mostly English. Because of the lack of qualified translators, I was occasionally doing translations. Later on I worked as a coordinator of project textual parts, which included translations or organization of translations of all the texts that were received from or sent to the foreign clients. At that time I also passed a course in Russian business language and twice visited construction sites in Russia. In 1994 I decided to continue my life as a freelance translator and in 1996 I became a member of the Association of Scientific and Technical Translators of Slovenia. I am married and have two children.
