Along with the growing interest in art galleries, the residents’ demand for daily consumer forums also increased. Therefore, Hyundai Department Store and the luxury hall/domestic goods hall of the Galleria opened in the mid-1980 and in 1990, respectively. Owing to opening of these department stores, Apgujeong-dong and Chungdam-dong emerged as the center of a luxury shopping culture. The concentration of galleries accelerated in the 1990s and a growing number of brand-name retail stores began to be built on both sides of Samsungro street, from the Galleria luxury hall to Cheongdam intersection.
Wedding consultant businesses started to be built in the Chungdam-dong area in the late 1990s, which encouraged other related businesses such as bridal shops, beauty salons, photo studios, hanbok (Korean traditional clothes) retailers and wedding present retailers. The fashion industry boomed after 2003, and this could be seen in the rapidly increasing number of hanbok manufacturing-related jobs.

First, a week before the ancestral rite (jesa), the whole village chooses one person to hold the position of master and five or six for officiants. Those who are to be designated as master and officiants must be unstained themselves and their family history also must have no blemish either. Then, the selected officiants have to behave themselves. They are not allowed to be around unclean areas such as houses in mourning, or to see unclean things and eat smelly food like meat. If someone gives birth to a baby, the rite (jesa) is postponed until a week after the chosen day.
The foods used for the rite vary. For example, they could include rice, glutinous rice, red beans, beef, pork, dried pollack and five kinds of fruits such as jujubes, chestnuts, persimmons, etc. The foods which are served up on the table are refined rice wine (cheongju), white rice cakes, white rice, beef, and fruits and so on. Fruit are served on the table without being peeled. Around 40 households share the expenses for the rite and 70 households donate white rice, 360ml [2hop] from each house.
The rite proceeds in Confucian style. It starts with the placement of an ancestral paper table with the name of a guardian spirit written on it, and then incense is burned following this. After that, people bows deeply twice and offer a ritual prayer. Then, they burn ritual papers as a means of purifying their uncleanness during the prayer. A household that contains elderly people must begin this burnt offering event. When the whole ritual procedure is finished, the ritual foods are distributed evenly to every household.
