Recent discoveries in the Hajar mountains have revealed that man has been present in the Emirates for more than ten thousand years, since the Middle and Late Paleolithic period. Before these archeological finds, the earliest known human occupation, for which there is substantial evidence, dated from the Neolithic period, 7500 years ago (5500 BC) when the climate was more temperate. The early inhabitants of the region were most likely nomadic cattle herders.
Ceramics from Ubaid dating to 5000 BC have been found at Ras Al Khaimah (Julfar).

Sharjah University is a leading academic institution in the field of higher education. The University of Sharjah is a comprehensive university, established due to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and Supreme President of the University of Sharjah.
